Hi - I am new to this site. I have a complete phobia about going to the doctor and it is stopping me from getting on with my life. I am ready to start a family but need to get something checked out before I can get pregnant and I can't put off going any longer. I was wondering if anyone has heard of any doctors who are specialised in dealing with patients like me? I read once about a special dentist service for people who are terrified to go and wondered whether there was a similar thing set up by doctors as I need a doctor who understands my fear of all things medical before I can pluck up the courage to go.

Thanks!

Hey Ali,

Welcome to the site!!

I haven't heard personally of doctors specialised, but you can usually find a good doctor who is understanding of phobias. Perhaps you could try ringing your surgery and enquire.

They might be able to put you in the right direction.

Take care,

Every time you avoid your fears they become stronger, every time you face your fears they become weaker.

Hi Ali

Firstly, a big welcome to the site.

I must admit I have not heard of gps who specialised in patients with your phobia.

As others have suggested you could try ringing your local surgery or what about ringing NHS Direct, if there are gps out there like this, they might be able to point you in the right direction - just a thought. Their number is: 0845 4647 Open 24 hours etc.

Hope this helps.

Wishing you well

Elaine

Ali,

If you do get pregnant this will be lots of exposure therapy with all the midwifery and obstetric appts and scans that you will need to attend for...

Do try to speak to your doctor and discuss this with them.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Hi ya

Welcome to the forum! Health anxiety and pregnancy can actually be quite a good mix, because if you want to be certain of how healthy you are this will be the time to find out.

Pregnancy requires regular check ups as meg has already said, but it is also a time to build a relationship up with your GP and to seek the advice and guidance and reassurance you need.

Good luck and take care and I am sure everything will work out well for you
