Has anybody ever taken 60mg Mirtazapine at all? I am on 45mg at the moment but am not sleeping and have started feeling really anxious. I am seeing the psychiatrist today and wonder whether anybody else had had their meds uppped over the recommended amount.

Thanks
Banana

Hi Banana!

I've been on Mirtazapine for approaching 7 weeks starting at 15 mg and now at 45 mg. Unfortunately, for me, they are proving useless. Sedation, mood swings, very irritable a lot of the time (not like me) and no effect on the depression. Seeing doc this week and am going to ask to change as I've given them a long enough trial. I know under specialist supervision, mirt can be upped to above 45 mg but if they're not working at 45 i doubt it would really help.

I was on Seroxat after being diagnosed with major depression back in 2000 and they worked wonders but seemed to stop working earlier this year hence the switch to mirtazapine. Really disappointed cos recent trial suggest mirts are very effective for depression although I guess it all depends on individual neurological makeup etc. Am a med student so have done a fair bit of research in this area. Escitalopram seems to get good reviews so I'm going to try and get a prescription for that as i will not stay on mirtazapine any longer. It is making me worse not better!

Worried that doc will say no because escitalopram is expensive compared with other SSRIs...

I was going to go on 60mg but then things got better. Have been on 45 for years and they've been a godsend. Sometimes psychiatrists augment with another AD rather than increasing dosage. Hope you're lucky to trust your psychiatrist, then you'll take their advice xx

I'm sorry that you are unwell banana. I was prescribed mirtazapine 15-30mg in addition to other meds lithium and dothiepin. It helped me a lot as I was very ill at the time very low mood and suicidal. I am not taking it now. I expect that your psychiatrist will augment the mirtazapine with something else unless he is sure that it is not working. I hope your appointment goes well today.

Hi I am taking 60mg of mirtazapine but have put on almost 2 stone in weight since starting it in Aug this year. The doctor is going to change me to another AD this week and has been reducing the amount I take from 60mg down to 15mg, before I switch.

Can anyone help me. Should I start to loose this weight I have gained with Matazapine once I have stoped taking it, I go to a slimming club and am being very healthy but I can't seem to even loose a pound a week at the moment.

Thanks really look forward to hearing your replies!

I sympathize with you ... It's really hard to lose weight when you're on mirtazapine but when you come off you'll find it a lot easier to to lose it. Never heard of 60mg dose though - I thought 45mg was highest ...
Good luck! :)

hi banana i have been taking mirtazapine for 10 years and quite honestly dont feel it has done much for me; last time i saw psyciatrist she introduced venlafaxine but to no avail. i have been on 45 mgs per night plus temazapine but can still wake-up 4 hours later. hope you find something that works for you. xx

I too have been on 45mg Mirtazapine for 4 and a half years. At first they worked wonders but now I feel no effect at all. My GP told me 45mg was the highest dose?. I'm seeing phychiatrist in two weeks to have meds reviewed as I'm taking Pregablin Lyrica as well.
unfortunately it seems as though it really is a 'trial and error' situation as some meds work better for one person than another.

I took mirtazapine for only a very short time...it gave me the weirdest dreams so i stopped. I still have problems sleeping but i'd rather not take them, the amitriptyline does the job most nights.
