Hi my name is Simone!

Im new to the website, its just fantastic! Just reading that other people have the same condition and syptoms is so relieving.

Ive suffered with panic attacks since the age of 20 I am now 24, my life has been on hold, I havent travelled out of Lincoln for nearly 5 years.

The doctor has diagnoised my anxiety as Globus Hystericus - difficulty in swallowing/choking sensation. In 5 years I still havent managed to cope with the attacks or calm myself down.

One day I hope to managed my attacks and go on holiday to somewhere tropical!

Thank you for making the time to read my problem!

Hi Simone

Welcome to the forum. It certainly is reassuring when you realise you are not alone.

The throat symptoms you mention are common and you might like to read the posts MORE HORRID SYMPTOMS!!!! (http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1957) and A strange one, anyone else experienced similar?? (http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3741) about this.

Also have a look at the First Steps (http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/default.asp?t=cms&c=firststeps) information.

Are you receiving any help from a therapist for this at all?

Interesting that your doctor diagnosed your panic AS Globus Hystericus.

We see it more as one symptom of a larger anxiety picture.

Maybe it is having this symptom that causes you to panic - but what caused the symptom initially ??

Wade your way through some of these to see you're in good company and can be overcome

Hi all

Im still trying to figure out the site, hopefully im doing it right! Here goes....

To answer some questions, I really struggle with coping with panic attacks, Ive tried most things from Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture and still I cant stop thinking about having an attack which then gives me one! Im stuck in a rut, I work myself up all the time, I can see my freinds and family and work colleagues getting impatient with me. There is not a day goes by when im not burning with anxiety.

Any suggestions? I am a happy person really, I sound so desperate!

Well done for recognising that it is your own thought patterns that are keeping you from making progress.

General counselling is not the same as CBT which you may want to investigate further.

Hi Simmy and welcome,

*I am a happy person really, I sound so desperate!* Not at all, everyone feels like this at first, just finding the site and starting to post will help immensley I'm sure.

Finding out the cause of the anxiety will help you deal with the symptoms.

Also changing your thought patterns; you are very right. If you think about panic you probably will, I have done it so many times. It is hard to change your thoughts but just noticing them is a good start. Have you read anything about CBT? it may help with those thoughts.

Hi Simone,

I understand what you're going through. Since I became ill I don't like motorways or bridges and I try to steer well clear of kitchen knives. I can't stress how important it is for you to face your fears though, because otherwise they take over your life and deprive you of so much. I become very anxious and agitated even driving to work, but I still commit myself to trips away because otherwise I'm trapped in this small town. I know it isn't easy and I actually dread the trips beforehand, but once we're a little way into it I begin to relax and it's not so bad. Facing and conquering fear is so rewarding and liberating- you'll wonder why you let yourself worry so much. I read a quote recently: "When you notice how much danger there is all around you, then nothing is really very scary". Personally, I've suffered from severe anxiety for about three years, but I truly believe the further you can expand your 'comfort zone', the easier life becomes.
