I have been struggling to breathe properly for over 3 weeks.
I am asthmatic (mild) but I have been to the doctors and they have said that my asthma is OK.
I have recently started trying to breathe slowly and exhale completely and it seems to work although my chest does feel very foggy. The trouble is that I seem to find myself holding my breath when I am not concentrating on my breathing which makes me get out of breath. I just seem to keep going around in circles without getting any better for more than about an hour at a time.
Also when I talk I seem to stop breathing altogether which is now making me want to stop talking. (maybe a good thing)

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone ? It has been happening for 3 weeks although the last week has been the worst.
Also I sleep like a log at night.

Thanks
Gary

I catch my self holding my breath alot of breathing very shallow but it's not good to focus to much on it. The more you stress about the worse it will get.
Try my breathing tip i posted on the site.

Every morning and when you feel you arte not breathing properly.

Breath all you air out and hold for as long as you can I when I say all i mean till it hurt's basicly. Then slowly breath air in till you fill you lung really full that you cant fit any more air in. then hold and count and when you can no longer hold it slowling let it out. Repeat about 5 time and increase over time.

Hi Gary,
Welcome to the forum, you will get a lot of good advice here.

The breathing is such a big anxiety issue, we tend to over breath. Breathing from the stomach really helps. Put your hands on your stomach and take deeps breaths, making sure you can feel your stomach rise and fall. This is the way we should breath.

I hope this helps.
Take care

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I had a great day yesterday when I didn't even think about breathing for 3 hours. I then noticed how well I felt and started feeling worse - but not as bad as I have been.
Today is a bit worse again (my wife thinks it's work) although I am controlling my breathing better and have stopped trying to gulp the air in.
I have been reading a lot of posts on here and although I have symptoms of panic they never seem as bad as others stories. I just get really foggy in the chest (for no reason that I can think of) and then mentally make myself worse. I don't think that I am panicking, but if I am, what sort of thing starts it off. It's so weird that all of a sudden I can't do something like breath, that I have never even thought about before.

Thanks
Gary

Hi everyone!

I've never been in a chat room, so please bear with me...I'm new at this!

First, a little of my history...

When I was 22, in my last year of University, I had my first panic attack. I was giving a presentation in my English class, and hyperventilated. It scared me a lot, but I got through it, and was OK, panic-wise, until about five years later, when everything starting changing...

Suddenly, even riding the bus became scary. I felt enclosed and it went straight to my bowels. Not a fun experience! The pinnacle of that feeling came when I was standing in line at a concert and had to make a run across the University campus where the show was to use a bathroom. I finally visited a psychiatrist, who prescribed Imipramine to "slow down my digestive system". It worked, so I stayed on it until I felt like I could be myself again in (so-called) stressful situations (I was on it about two years). I got off it in 1997.

However, I found that even though I felt better about a lot of things, I still sometimes encountered that claustrophobic feeling (like, I always wanted the aisle seat at a cinema, or hated being a passenger in a car on the highway), and I would worry that it would escalate into a "got to reach a bathroom - NOW!" feeling, especially once when I was on the subway in Toronto and it stopped in the tunnel! I swear, I read every word of that newspaper I was holding to ward off the symptoms! But, it worked.

Lately, however, things have been happening again. I've had a lot of trouble sleeping (my mind won't shut off), and when I had a cold recently, or have just gotten over one, and am trying to sleep (like tonight!), my constant throat-clearing won't let me. Worse yet, I work for an esthetics academy and have three career fairs/presentations in a row this week, and I'm nervous about talking to the high school kids! What if I freak out & have to leave the room???? My mind's a whir, and I can't relax and sleep. I've even been feeling like I can't breathe when I lie down and I get up and pace, crying....my mind's also on a lot of other stuff, and I think I need severe therapy to get over this hump, but this week time is of the essence!

I bought some Valerian today, but am afraid to try it. It's an herbal remedy, and it's mixed with Skullcap Herb and Hops Strobiles. Can I get some feedback from people who have tried something like this? How did it make you feel? Were you able to sleep? How long until it kicked in? I'm a mess at work, and I have to give my first presentation on Wednesday (it's just past midnight early Tuesday morning here...). I need my sleep, but whenever I lie down to go to sleep (or, as in tonight's case, fall asleep but wake up an hour later in a panicked state), I'm too stressed and it feels like my throat won't clear.

HELP!!!! Any feedback graciously welcomed!

I find that interesting. I too catch myself alot holding my breath. I think its like instinct. Whenever i start feeling dizzy or not right i notice i subconciously start holding my breath. I have no idea if im overbreathing or not, I never think so. The dizziness seems to be coming out of no where, but maybe im doing it and not even noticing. I will try the breathing tips and see how they work. God help me lol. IM a friggin mess.

My breathing rate is now under control. However I keep feeling that I need to get a lot of breath and that my chest is foggy. It feels like I have bad asthma but it isn't asthma because my chest feels dry and hot inside. I just keep telling myself that I don't need to keep inhaling a lot and I can prevent myself from doing it. However the constant foggy feeling in my chest is making me think there is an underlying problem - I'm convinced that I have lung cancer although I am quite young to have it and the only symptom I have is shortness of breath.
Yesterday I felt well for most of the day until I was lighting some fireworks for the kids. I suddenly started feeling a bit out of breath which then turned into feeling hot and dizzy as well.
As soon as our friends had gone I started feeling a bit better. I then woke at 5am this morning (i seem to be waking early a lot) and felt OK - but within a minute my chest is starting to get foggy again.

I am going back to the doctors tomorrow, but is it possible that I am imagining this, because it does get worse when I think about it and can be OK when I am occupied.

Try this when your having breathing problems. Imagine a large hot air balloon in the distance with your eyes closed, can be any colour you want. But when you breath in the balloon gets closer, and when you breath out the balloon gets further away, this way you are concentrating on the balloon not your breathing.

Really imagine you can see the balloon, the clouds the birds everything.

my doc said I am suffering from panic.
My breathing goes from great to terrible multiple times per day. The bad bouts can last up to 2 hours.
What's worse is that I am now getting worried about when it is going to happen next, and tonight at parents evening I felt really weak and dizzy as well. I seem to be getting worse.
Now I believe my doctor (95%) that I have nothing physical wrong with me, otherwise I would feel bad all the time.
But all I can do is think about my breathing even when it's good - so much so, that I am sure that when it is OK I analyse it so much that it becomes bad.
How do I stop thinking about it before it gets out of control ?
