notifications, private messages

Hi. When I come on site there's a tiny blue tick by the notifications/private messages at the top of the page. I can't access them unless I actually go into active topics and select one of the drop downs.
Also, there is still no pop up to let me know a new message has arrived.
Do I need to select something somewhere?

Alex is in the process of adjusting both them bits, so will be sorted very soon.
