If you haven't hurt your mouth when eating something then it sounds like it could be a dental abcess? Your dentist would be best person to have a look and you'll probably get an antibiotic - that's if it doesn't settle down itself in a day or two.

well the problem is i will have to wait over a week to see a dentist, i dont think its an absess as im pretty sure i would be in more pain however it could be a gum infection or something so still quite worrying but im just think if i leave it over a week/nearly two weeks to see a dentist am i at risk of it becoming more serious as i know mouth infection can cause heart failure in the long run?

The fact that you're saying it doesn't seem bad enough to be an abcess is a good thing!! Can you afford to buy an antiseptic mouthwash? You could use this for a day or two and see if it disappears. You can also rinse your mouth with warm water with some salt added. Please try not to worry too much, I know it's easy to say that, but it's not life-threatening and it'll settle down in time. We all worry about every lump and bump but quite often they disappear as quick as they've come. If it persists then see your dentist when you can manage to.

ok well i prob wont be able to go for over a week so do you think this will be ok and i won't die if i leave it that long? ive had it since wed and it does seem better today, it still hurts but no where near as much as it was on wed. so do you think leaving the dentist for almost two weeks will be ok?

I'd wait and see how it goes over the next day or two. It may settle down. If it gets any more painful then you'll have to see about it as you'd only be miserable. Hopefully it'll sort itself out in a day or two. You could always see the dentist when you go home just to have it checked out if it's still bothering you. I think if it got so bad you'd see the dentist sooner anyway.
Take care

hey, i'm really freakng out because i did some googling (i know i shouldn't but i was hoping it would help) and i read that a bump on the gum could be a tumour. i'm even more scared about going, i was convinced it was an infection but now it could be something very serious. what do you think?

hey, i went to dentist today and i have an infected and decayed wisdom tooth. its preety bad, they have given some antibiotics to help with the pain but i will have to have the tooth out and i have no idea when thats gonna be but apparently the waiting list is quite long. i'm so scared now though co ive gotta go into hospital to have it out and the dentist scared me by telling me that there could be complications and if it goes wrong i could lose feeling on one side of mouth.

Hi Louise.

Glad you went

DO NOT worry about having your wisdom tooth out.. ive had two out and it was fine.. just have to make sure its kept clean afterwards to avoid infection so best to avoid eating solids for a couple of days and chew on the other side for a bit when you do eat solids.

You will be fine....

Well done : )

hey again, i just can't stop worrying about this. I'm not to worried about having my tooth out but i am slightly concerned about leaving the infected tooth in my mouth until i have the extraction i mean i'm pretty sure infections can spread to the rest of your body and cause all sorts of problems.

Louise if the dentist thought the infection was so bad that it wasn't safe to leave it he would have fitted you in as an emergency. Alot of people go around with infections without doing anything about it. It will be fine for a couple of weeks. Try not to worry x

yea but i'm having it taken out at the hospital coz the dentist said he wouldnt do it because of the risks. so i'm probably gonna have to wait ages, they said it would be 6-8 weeks before i even get a consultation? and because the gum is covering the tooth its really uncomfortable but theres nothing they can do about that? and i now i just have to go back to uni and get on with things when all i can think about is this and i cant concentrate on my work.

my 3 remaining wisdom teeth were severely infected and my dentist wouldn't touch them and i had to see a specialist outside of my town, i was given antibiotics to clear up the infection and had to wait 2 months to have them out, there was no complications and they were whipped out in less than 20 mins.

Never had any problems and the antibiotics kept the pain away.

I'm sure you will be fine.

I have had something simular, a sore red bump just behind my two front teeth. but it went away after a few days, I get it from time to time but just put it down to maybe have eaten something and scratched the gum or just one of those things I also get swelling under my tongue on one side now and than but i think that is an allergic reaction to somethings I eat.

hey, So do you think they will give me a general or local anesthetic? i can't stop thinking about this and how bad it could be. i keep thinking there gonna do an x ray of my teeth and i'm gonna be riddled with infection and i cant stop thinking about what could go wrong. can anyone relate to this? how do i deal with these thoughts?

if you did not have an x-ray of your teeth at your normal dentists, then they will probably give you one at the hospital, depending on how bad your tooth is you could have either anesthetic, i was offered to have it numbed and sedation but chose to just have it numbed.

I'm sure the x ray won't show up infection all over and everything will be fine.

I had a very similar problem and had to go to a specialist dentist to get one of my back teeth taken out, there had been a similar bump on it, which was there for ages. My dentist said I could be knocked out cold or just have it numbed, I chose to have it numbed because i dont like the thought of bein sedated. Was realli worried it was gonna hurt a lot but it didn't hurt a single bit, not even afterwards and it was done in like 2 mins. Dont worry! It took ages for me to get mine out and it didnt cause any other problems at all

Take care :)

i know i'm probably worrying over nothing and these sort of things i wouldnt worry over at all a few years ago but now i just worry about everything and i keep researching it and i keep coming across loads of bad things. its all i can think about...its driving me insane and theres nothing i can do about. i'm not in any pain at all really...its just where the gum has come over the tooth which is a a bit uncomfortable but i think im just getting used to that. i hope i will be able to just have it numbed but i have had a tooth out before and they me a general anesthetic so i was asleep but i hate having a general anesthetic coz it makes me sick after. i just keep thinking that when they do the x-ray something really bad will be found.
