My cousin's on Beta Blockers but has read that they take 2-3 weeks to take effect?

Also, she is having problems regarding really vivid dreams - I trust this is a side effect?

As far as I was aware, Beta Blockers will have an immediate effect. They slow down your heart and circulation, so I would imagine they will have had some effect straightaway. They are prescribed for people with high blood pressure, migraines or just plain old anxiety/nervous tension. They are also safe to be taken in pregnancy.
I'm not aware of any side effects involving dreams, I would hazard a guess that the decision to take the pills is playing on your mind, and obviously you have worries on starting any medication that may have an impact on you and your current situation.
Obviously I'm no expert, and if you have worries about the medication I would strongly advise you to return to your GP as soon as possible to discuss them.
