Here i go again

I have been reading........ not a good idea i know, but i need to try and work out whats up with my hormones so i can finally beleive my five negative HIV tests.

Can any girls please tell me if they have ever been told that they have low progesterone and if so how old they are.

Also does anyone have a cycle that only last 25 days?

Also does anyone with PCOS still get periods?

Thanks ladies

hi Lisa not sure on the progesterone, but i do have pcos and yes i do have periods, but my periods are all over the place, they can be anything from 20 days to 48 days without a period so i never really know where i am, Having children can mess up your hormones big time and some medications can mess with your cycle. I honestly wouldnt worry about this as it is a very common problem and 25 days is actually pretty normal.

Have you been tested form pcos? i was years ago and i was told i may have trouble conceiving, but it didnt affect me at all.
hope you feel better soon xxxx

I know about the "reading" - I have to stop as well. Its like I am searching for reassurance...

Anyway - I'm also not sure about the progesterone...I ahev no idea what mine is...I am in my low 40's though and my body is changing...my periods are also all over the place. I worried and worried about it - my Dr. had me go through a bunch of test (I don't think she actually thought there was something wrong, I think she really wanted to calm my nerves) and everything came out just fine. She told me it is totally normal for our bodies to start to change in our 30's and 40's (and for some people in their 20's)...

In short I really wouldn't worry about it! ;-)

Hi Lisa it was my irregular periods that actually took me to the doctors and he sent me for a scan, even though my periods were so irregular i still didnt have any trouble conceiving, i do have slight body hair problem but nothing major im very fair so any hairs are blonde, but nothing a bit of waxing cant sort, i just assumed it was age as im a ripe old 30 now lol. I actually didnt know that pcos can cause excess body hair as it has never bothered me and believe it or not have never googled it because its the least of my worries lol, are you having problems that maybe could be pcos? i think you can get simple blood test done that gives them an idea but again im not sure as im going back about 4 years got the results and never had any follow up on it.
take care matie xxxxx

Well have really odd dark hair growing on my legs now and it grows so quick. I have to shave it every day, gross. Also i just have such weird mood swings through the month. My periods are super regular 25 days but they area lot lighter than they were when i was younger ( im 33) and i have the darker patched of skin on inside arms and top of legs that can happen with it to. Also get horrible spots mid cycle amnd these really awfull fluey feelings for about three days starting always on the fourth day of my period.and cant seem to lose baby weight at all and thats over a year now.

And insomnia too, but only at certain times of the month.

I get freaked out because im sure that all this started after i met the person who i worry about the hiv thing over?!!?!?

hi Lisa, i think one of the main symptoms with pcos is irregular periods if yours are regular i would think you havnt got it, but why not get checked with the doc? the hair problems are usually hormonal and your baby is still very young although a year old your hormones can take even longer to settle if they settle at all, and dont forget whilst you are suffering with anxiety they are going to be all over the place anyway, i have often had conversations with my friends about hair growth and they all agree as we get older we all get unwanted hair in places that we have never before, one of my friends has a hairy toe lol, she has to shave it as it upsets her boyfriend. I would say go get a test from the docs but it probably will turn out to be ok,

I have PCOS and have fairly normal periods that are every 30-32 days; however, this month I am on day 26 and I think I'm getting ready to start. I'm 35 and my periods are a lot lighter than they used to be also. My doctor said as long as I am having periods, it really doesn't matter how heavy they are; it's just important that I'm having them regularly. I don't know much about progesterone, sorry!

PCOS is interesting and misunderstood. There is not a clear definition of PCOS, and many forget it is a 'syndrome' and not a disease... this means it is a collection of symptoms (like IBS). Where one person with PCOS may suffer from lack of periods (amenorrea) others may have heavy periods, insulin resistance, or acne. You may have some or none of these things. There is no gold standard.

As an example, I was told I have PCOS. Now, I have no trouble with my periods, or fertility (no children, though did have a termination), I am also a fairly normal weight (BMI of 22). I do have the body hair thing though, which is pesky.

Hi Marley

Like your reason for editing ha ha

Thanks loads for your answer. So have you always had the body hair thing since really young or did it start when you were older? Is that how you found out you had it and also what did they do to find out? Sorry I hope you dont mind me asking only the hair thing is causing me to worry so much

Thanks again luv

I forgot to put in my response that I have excess body hair as well. That was one of the reasons they checked me for PCOS, that and at the time I was having very irregular periods. I have always had a lot of hair, but over the years it seems to be popping up in places I'd rather it not!! I guess that's a sign of PCOS.

Hey there

It's hard to tell with the hair - I'm part Mediterranean, so part of it's probably to do with that. I'm 25, and I've probably noticed the hair thing since I was 15? It's annoying, but there are ways to deal with it.

Your diagnosis depends on your doctor. More doctors are aware and willing to diagnose PCOS now than they were 10 years ago. Now, they'll often run blood tests to check glucose/insulin resistance, as this is one of the easier ways to diagnose and remedy some of the apparent PCOS symptoms.

Hormones run rampant in all of us at the best of times. I guess the trouble is that most of us were taught that our hormonal troubles ended once our teen years ended... How wrong that is!

Hi
I'm 28 and was getting increased dark hair around my chin and neck and a few elsewhere - gradually it got worse over the past 2 years. I have a wee girl age 6.
My periods are still regular - around every 28-30 days and have always been really heavy (not a symptom of PCOS) and painful.
Got an internal scan at the end of last year which confirmed PCOS - which the specialist doubted due to heavy regular periods.
My GP sent me to the dermatologist who prescribed cream for the excess hair recently - I haven't got it yet.
They told me it might reduce my chances of having another child - so going to let nature take it's course!
I also get a really sharp pain about a week or two before my period - does anyone else get that?
AJ :)

Thanks for replying AJS. I too have a little girl as well. I dont have facial hair but my leg hair has gotten very thick and dark and also my bikini line is now over to my actually leg!!!

Do you also seem a bit run down? Lilke your hormones are causing your immune system to be poor?

Do you know what they found on your scan? Was it ovary cysts?

Sorry to pry, just really am glad that you are having symtoms i can relate to, maybe its not just me after all!

When they did the scan the guy showed me on the screen - it's lots of eggs that have not fully formed and not been released at time of the month - he explained it as - on each ovary you should have one big egg ready for release - one medium sized ready for the following month - then a very small one in the making for the future. But on each of my ovary's there was approx 12-15 eggs off various sizes that had not come out. the eggs cause a small sack or cyst around them which they usually burst through at ovulation. the ovary's kind of look like a bunch of small grapes. I think ovarian cysts are a different thing altogether.
I do feel a bit run down and tired all the time - but I can't tell if it's from the pcos or from the anxiety or citalopram. I get the big sore spots around my chin and mouth on the run up to my period.
PCOS can make you more prone to not being able to lose weight (me), and more prone to diabetes etc.
There is no cure for pcos - but there are some medications for different symptoms - ie if you are having trouble conceiving they can give you a course of treatment, if you have excess hair and are not planning any more kids they can put you on a certain contraception pill that helps - I opted not to do this as I would possibly like to have more kids.
The doctor has highly recommended a healthy diet and exercise.

Long time no speak Lisa! How are you? I came here today just to find my long lost overseas friend!!!
I am glad to see that you are focuisng on your hormones. There are 2 kinds of PCOS and you can have periods with either. You can also have a hormone imbalance without PCOS. The best way to determine your progestrone levels is by temping EVERY morning at the same time just like if you are trying to get pregnant. Your body goes through phases so if you temp every morning you should see low temps at the start of your cycle when you are estrogen dominate then you Ovulate and temps should rise for the 2nd half of the month when progrstrone enters the cycle. When it drops, your period will come. Low progestrone will cause break through spotting because progestrone going away is what makes your period start. You would need to temp for 3 months to see a trend. They can test through blood work but hormone levels fluxuate so much throughout the day and throughout your cycle that temping is the most acurrate way. I have a good site to help you if you are interested although it is for trying to get pregnant. It is good for natural birth control too.
I would love to hear from you ;-)

hiya hon..
i dont have pcos but my friend does so know a little about it... i do know a bit about hormones though... i had a miscarraige in sept 09 and my hormones have been all over ever since... the dr said i had post miscarraige depression... the same as post natal due to your body not producing progesterone after end of pregnancy... everything seemed to be gradually settling down only now i seem to have developed pmt???? i have never had pmt before but its apparently been triggered by my hormones after the miscarraige.... the dr has informed me that it could take about a year for my hormones to settle... at the moment i seem to have two weeks a month tha i can cope and two weeks that i cant... i feel really tired, low, ratty, impatient, cant focus, forgetfull, tears all the time.... i hope these feelings will pass becaue i dont wnt to be like this. i want to get back to how i was pre pregnancy!!!!!!
i hope we feel better soon...

i also have terrible health anxiety... this seems to have taken over from the panic tha i had at first!!!!!!!!!

take care
