i asked my phsciatrist last time in june last year if he would refer me and all he wanted to do is give me a,d,s which i am adamant i dont want to take ,,,,

my dr this morning tried again to give me drugs and i told her for the tenth time i dont want atideppressants they only help you short term and they only mask the problems they dont deal with the underlying issue of why i have anxiety agaraphobia,,

VISIOUS CIRCLE

so i really dont know where to go with this now i have had these symptoms for 8 years and tried to stay positive ,,,but what can you think when you cant get help off the proffesonals?????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????.,,,,

Oh how very disappointing.

I do totally agree with you and I would look for another doctor.

Good on you for knowing what way forward you want to go:)

Best of luck.

Trevor,

I'd just tell them exactly what you said on here. That you are sick of being fobbed off with drugs and that you want to be able to solve the problem yourself rather than just given stuff to mask it. You could also say that you have heard good things about CBT and that you think that it would really help you given how long you have had anxiety. I mean like you say, its far better to understand why this has happened to you and then learn how to deal with it rather than being given drugs which dont really sort out the root cause of it all. Thats all you need to say - what you have said to us on here! I think having anxiety for 8 years which hasnt really been treated successfully with drugs is a great reason to go for CBT! Good luck, hope it goes well. Be assertive and tell them what you want! :) Clare. xxx

hi trevor
just be firm and say that you do not want to tale anti ds and that you want to be refered for cbt its your right to be refered and if he says no complain everyone is answerable to someone
i no the feeling i have also refused meds and was told by the pyschiatrist that there was nothing more he could do allegedly im on a list i even asked for recomendation for private docs who do cbt and he couldnt recommend anyone either .. helpful.... stick to your guns trevor meds are not for everyone there must be alternatives and i agree with piglet change your gp however i did think the refferal had to come from the phyciatrist but she could have contacted him on your behalf hey im ranting too rant rant rant
take care

Hi Trevor
not sure what happens in your part of the UK but i know where i live that cbt is provided by different services, here it is provided by psychology services not psychiatry and it is a CPN that assesses you for the appropriateness of the treatment in case they canhelp you with a self help pathway which they work through with you, they then refer you to psychology services where you are then assessed by a psychologist and assigned appropriate treatment ( a fairly long process).I know it is not right but sometimes there is a little rivalry between the specialities and they dont always work together the way they should that is perhaps why your psychiatrist is loathed to refer you. My advice to you would be to be truthful with the psychiatrist and tell him that its cbt that you want, you never asked to be referred to him you just want CBT and if he refuses to refer you tell him that you want his clinical reason for refusal and that you want a second opinion, it may be that your gp cant refer you straight on, like i said imnot sure about your healthboard but if the can that is another alternative to see another gp in your practice but you may find that you might meet them "sticking together" the way they sometimes do. Good luck and let us know how you get on, remember the patients charter, you have a right to recieve the appropriate treatment
Take care

Have you tried the National Phobics Society?

They offer CBT, hypnotherapy at reduced rates depending on your income.

I gave up hope with the NHS years ago.

Trevor,
Stop worrying about Friday 13th or else I am going to start worrying myself about it!!!!!

Psychiatrists give you meds - that's what they do - they are specialists in the medication and they are like doctors - they give you medication for your illness.

I'm very very surpised that he wont let you go down the road of seeing a psychologist for CBT. Psychs are normally all for it especially with anxiety.

Explain to t he psych that you really do not like the idea of meds. Tell him that you feel that cbt may be a great help to you.

There are a couple of websites on line that do free cbt courses that you can do on your computer. Also there is a book which you can buy (it was recommending to me by my psych) its callede "Mind Over Mood" - it is cognitive behaviour therapy and it is the book that most psychologists are now using with their patients.

The book is full of exercises - thought recvords etc that you have to fill in - it can be hard going but it is an alternative.

Try phoning Mind for some help - they are a good organisation and may be able to offer you something.

Best wishes.
Yvonne

Print off, familiarize yourself with them and wave the NICE guidelines at him. They're on our 'Finding Help' homepages.

They clearly say that CBT is the preferred treatment of choice so simply anxiety and agoraphobia not AD's.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.
