Hello, I'm Lyn. I feel like the only person in the world who has the problem that I do, so I was pleased to find a website where I can see it is not only me that has problems. (Although I don't wish it on anyone!)

Sorry if this is a bit long! It started when I was 12 years old and I was on my own eating some chips. I didn't exactly choke on it, but it got stuck in my throat and I felt like I couldn't breathe and honestly thought I was going to die. I managed to move it on by quickly having a drink, but ever since then my life has never been the same and I've never eaten properly since. I don't know why, but I didn't tell anyone at the time - not even my parents. I guess I wanted to pretend everything was ok and not worry my mum. I finally told my best mate when I was 18 and she sat with me whilst I told my mum about it. She then helped me with going to the doctor and appointments and things. I tried a range of different 'treatments' which included: having my tonsils out, (they were enlarged but made no difference when they were gone) reiki healing, 2 different hypnotherapists, counselling, and medication for anxiety/depression. None of these helped at all, apart from the medication perhaps eased my anxiety a little. It's been about 5 years now since I had these things and I've kind of given up hope. Also, my mum never asks me about it anymore - I think she just assumes I'm ok now (but I'm really not) and I find it so hard to talk about anyway, I can't bring myself to talk to her about it. So I've struggled with this for over 10 years now (I'm 23).

I've only ever told my mum, (who obviously told my dad, not that I really wanted her to), my best friend, and my boyfriend. I really don't like talking about it but I can't see how I can go through the rest of my life with this problem - it affects me every single day because of course I have to eat every day and it has made almost every aspect of my life hard. It's worse when I'm in front of people so I hate going to restaurants or eating at college, at work, whilst socialising - anything.

Sorry this is so long, but I can't really explain it any simpler than that.

Welcome

If it has been decided by the doctors that your throat sensations have anxiety as the origin, you might want to wade through these and see if there are any you can relate to.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Thanks alot everyone, I've gone through all those links and it is good to know others have experienced similar things. I do think my problem is different though, because most of those people seem to have developed a swallowing problem due to other anxieties and have got over it within a few months (lucky buggers!). As I said before, I believe it was that one incident that set the whole thing off and as I've had it so long now, it's really 'deep set' and is a part of me. I don't want it to be though!!
Honestly, I have tried everything such as distraction, not making a big deal of things, taking sips of water with every mouthful (which does help a bit) but nothing really works. I just have to put up with it. I think I'm going to try going back to the doctors sometime this week though.

Thanx again for your help though. I think this website is a great idea.

Hi Lyn and welcome.

It is definately a good idea to go back to the doctors. A lot of use have similar problems like you say but for different reasons.

Really you are one step ahead of some of us as you know what it was that started your problems. I am sure there is some form of therapy where you deal with the incident as a starting point and then move onto the symptoms. That makes no sense because I can't remember what it's called, I'll come back if I remember!

Hopefully the doctor will be able to point you in the right direction.

Take care.

Hi Lyn and welcome aboard,

You say that when you choked on the chips as a 12 year old you thought you were going to die. I just wondered if this 'thought' was in fact triggered by negative thoughts already laying in your mind.

Was your life fairly OK before the incident?

I only ask because some of our anxieties are quite deep rooted childhood issues going back when we were much younger.

Take Care,

Ray

Thanks again for your responses everyone. Clickaway, no I don't recall any negative thoughts at all before this incident. I was actually a very happy child. As I said, that moment completely changed my life in a bad way. I was fine up until that point. Ever since then I have become a very anxious person in general as well.

Thanks tammy, I think I know what you mean but I can't remember what it's called either at the mo!

Hi Lyn

Welcome aboard.

I am sure you can get some help for this - maybe something like CBT. If it is not physical and therefore in your mind it will be about changing those thoughts.

Hope you get some support on here.
