I have done a search on 5HTP but cant find any posts from people saying how long it has taken to work ?

I have been taking one 50mg tablet at night for a week now. Does it take a few weeks to get into your system the same way that ssri's do ?

Any info and comments from people that have tried it would really help me out

Cheers

You should notice the full benefits in 4-6 weeks (like SSRIs). It didn't help me but always worth a try.

It didn't help me either, but I hesitated to say that. Baggs.

Hey, your issue may be the dosage. I am reading a fab book on 5htp and the recommended dossage for depression/anxiety is 100mg 3 x a day. Up to a max of 900mg a day. Have been taking 400mg for about 5 days - and I do feel calmer, a lot calmer - but tired. I am thinking of pre-loading with this before I start my SSRI's so that they actually have something to work with! :)

Hi there.

I was actually advised 200mg a day. Perhaps you need to chat to someone where you bought it for further advice? There are different dosages for different requirements. I've been taking it at week, and I'm feeling the same as when I was on Dosulpin. Hope that helps

Hey Lell,

Do you take in divided doses or just at night? X

Hi,

Can I ask what 5HTP is and can you take it along with anti-depressants?

CS1 - The book is called: 5-Htp: The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity, and Insomnia by Michael Murray ND.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/5-Htp-Natural-Overcome-Depression-Insomnia/dp/0553107844/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273426784&sr=8-14

Hall - Although I have mixed 5htp with AD's it is not advised due to the chance of developing serotonin syndrome - although it is rare, it can be fatal. :) MM does mention the combination of it with AD's in his book, ie: he refers to it's combination with TCA's (which I am on) yet he repeats over and over that before taking with SSRI's to talk with your doctor. And it really really should not be taken with MAOI AD's.

Hope this helps.
