How doing you get the message across to the doctor without feeling like your being silly and exadurating things?

I have been to the doctors a number of times, spoke to a councilor about 5 times, been on and off medication all in the last 7-8 years. I feel like im being stupid when im sitting there trying to tell her how i feel and i think of people far worse off than me, like cancer patients for example. I know how i feel before i go into the surgery but when im there i get this overwhealming feeling of being rediculous.

I have never been treated for anxiety, only depression. Anxiety disorders were never mentioned. only in reading up online and reading what all you good people have to say here, and understanding how people are feeling, wholeheartedly. I now wonder what to do. My surgery was at the centre of a criminal case recently when a doctor there dismissed a child with severe asmah (cant spell it) and the 10 year old died. They left me with a condition last year with a coil stuck in leaving me to bleed profusly for 6 months unable to get an appointment with a gynacologist and seriously anemic. eventually i went to the sandyford institute and sough help outwith my gp! i have no faith that they have my interests at heart and would like to find another means of getting help like last time.

Can anyone give me advice on what to do?

thanx

Hi Mandy, I fully understand what you are saying and agree with you if GP is seeing someone every 10 to 15 minutes day in day out how can they listen and have your heath in there interest? With anxiety Depression and these kinds of problems I really don’t think many doctors understand they only know really what they have read and without anyone having anxiety / depression I don’t think they could begin to understand. Some GPs seem better than others and at least they send you to see a specialist or for some tests, but some don’t even do that it’s like the visit to the surgery was a complete waste of time. Even other physiological services like CBT etc the people I have spoke to have all seemed to be you early 20s etc and never had any illnesses in there life never mind anxiety/depression, I really cant see how these people can really help. At the end of the day I think the only people who can really help us is yourself and talking to others and getting tips from people with same kind of problems. Take care and hope you feel better soon. Vernon

I don't think you feel fully confident with this practice after the happenings there - is it possible to change to another surgery????

i dont know piglet, there is similar horror stories around the area where i live. i suppose it would make sence to change, but im affraid it will be worse. better the devil you know as it were. And its the thought of explaining your history to some one new, again.

Yes I know what you mean.

I'm fortunate in that we have quite a good practice with more than one Gp to see. Although I think my own GP is very nice I do think he is way too busy to really help me other than with medication.

It's such a shame, medication does have a big part to play but so do other therapies which more often get right to the source of the problem.

"Supposing it didn't," said Pooh after careful thought.

Hi there,

Sorry you're having a hard time with this. It really is important to find the right doctor, one that you can trust, so maybe changing doctors or practices would help. Failing that you could just tell them you want some treatment for anxiety or to be referred for CBT maybe.

I am so lucky with my doctor, she is so thorough and will always take as long as it needs to help or explain anything, even by phone when necessary and she wants to know about everything in my life not just the symptom I have. In fact all three of the female doctors at my practice are fantastic but mine is the most thorough and I have never felt rushed in an appt. My gp is often giving me relaxation tips or exercise to help with tight muscles or whatever it may be she thinks may help.
When I had CBT the lady I saw was in her 50's and had suffered anxiety herself which helped alot too as she really understood what it was like.

Good luck, there is help out there and there are good doctors to be found.

Lisa
