Hi jenn

Yes its one of the symptoms of a panic attack.
Just remember to breathe slowly & the attack will pass, breathing to fast will make you feel more unsteady.

Hi Jenn,

I recently went for a interview and had to travel from Glasgow to Penrith to get there by train about an hour a half journey and I had an attack very similar to the one you just described. I believe it is very common but I also found it hard to control. I have been told by a specialist that stimulants such as coffee, fizzy juice and chocolate can make these attacks worse. I also had low blood pressure, which accounted for my attack it was horrible and I haven’t had one since thank god.

If you haven’t already I think it may be a good idea to speak to your doctor and welcome on board best of luck.

Hi Jenn

I get these symptoms a lot but they do get better to handle once you accept they are anxiety related and not the result of some other illness as I used to (and still sometimes ) think

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

When you are having an attack one thing that you can try is this exercise and it is for your breathing. What you do is breathe in for 4 counts then hold for 4 counts then breathe out for 4 counts, do this for a short while until you feel more relaxed as this exercise brings your heart rate back down and by concentrating on the exercise you are destracting your mind from having the attack but also I had Cognitive Behavioural Therapy on the NHS which is new and after 7 weeks going to CBT I now no longer have panic attacks and then I had the confidence to give up smoking too. So CBT works! :D

The hard to swallow feeling is one of my major flaws in a panic attack. Sometimes, I feel if I can overcome that, then a lot of the panic will dissipate.
My counsellor asked me to try "7-11" breathing which helps a lot.
Breathe in for 7 seconds slowly, then out for 11 seconds slowly. When you do this, you're telling your body everything's OK so it should settle some of the symptoms.
Most panic comes from an overactive amigdula in the brain. Your brain, a bit like mine, is like an antenna which picks out all the bad thoughts floating around and tunes into them, rather than doing what other people around are doing and thinking of a song in their head, or the shopping list, or what to wear or something funny or good which has happened.
Relaxation techniques and just doing things bit by bit to reprogramme myself basically into not panicking as much seems to be working well at the moment.
It helps if you can imagine your "safe" place too. For example a room in the house you feel comfortable in or a walled garden for example are two places you may wish to be thinking about when panic starts to strike - somewhere you can feel secure.
