Hi

My CPN has advised me to go back on Mirtazapine under dosage instruction from my GP. I am not too concerned about the weight gain as I am under major stress at the moment and have lost a helluva lot of weight, so can live with that side effect-and can work at a healthier diet once my mood improves. Previous experience with Mirt up to 30mg was that it DID lift my mood and I was able to function relatively ok at that dose.

Big problem for me was sore mouth/gums-CPN suggested non-alcohol mouthwashes plus plenty water. I also have saliva tablets. Anybody had these problems and managed to cope? Also a real feeling of heaviness particularly in back of my legs was a problem too. Fluid retention?

I'd really appreciate any feedback-I DO feel the Mirt can help me but I see my GP on Friday and if I go back on this stuff I don't want the side effects to be intolerable as I really need a stable medical regime as I have been through just about every AD known to humankind without success. And I need to get back to work fairly soon or it's curtains!!

Thanks

Gordon

Dear Gordon I'm sorry that I haven't been in touch. I work in a specialist music shop and the beginning of term is our busiest time. I am currently taking 45mg of mirtazapine. I think that you should ask your CPN if you can try bonjela which is a gel which you can put on your gums if they become sore. I have oral B mouthwash which is alcohol free and nice tasting too. I think for me (and hopefully for you too) the positives will outweigh the negatives when taking mirtazapine. It is an appetite stimulant so if your gums are not too sore then hopefully you'll start getting the munchies soon. Are you starting on 7.5mg or 15mg tablets? There is supposed to be a soluble form of the mirt which although is expensive you could try asking for for the first few weeks? There is no quick fix for depressive illness I'm afraid. When I am well (like now) I find it so hard to imagine being ill again. The heavy legs are all part of the depression/side effects of the mirt. Bloatedness can be a side effect of the mirt. Are you managing to get out and about whilst you are off sick? A small walk outside will be benefitial. I wish I could help more. I have wondered how my depression would lift but it does. For me it is always a gradual process. It involves letting go and just 'being' for a while. Hard to do I know.EJ.

Hi Gordon,

I can only sing the praises of mirtazipine!!! Yes I have gained weight and its not ideal but as EJ says and for me too the benefits far outweighed the negatives of this drug. The heavy legs feeling will go after a while of being on the meds...I remember feeling what I described as heavy feeling. If you read back on my thread that may help you. I have come a long way and would not change the fact that I went onto mirt. Any questions please ask away. I hope you feel better soon.

Take care
Jo.xx
