View Full Version : Adrenaline should not exist ... seriously

It causes panic attacks and I know its supposed to help with fight or flight in danger but I don't think it even does that if you think about it.

How is getting a stress headache, feeling faint, shaky and disjointed, and getting constricted breathing going to help you in any situation where you really are in danger?
I think adrenaline makes it HARDER to react well to a dangerous situation by creating panic attacks.

It is a complete genetic defect that adrenaline exists in human bodies.
Any Opinions?

Well, our responses are an overreaction to the adrenaline release..you know why we have it but we don't react the same way as our ancestors.

I doubt very much that they suffered from stress headaches or worried about shakes and racing heart, they were too busy either fighting the enemy or fleeing in the opposite direction. :)

On a purely personal note I am extremely glad adrenaline is around..when I was a small child back in the sixties it was the only emergency treatment for severe asthma..without it I probably would have died.

We need adrenaline or we would not have feelings ! You know that butterfly in the stomach excitement - well that is from adrenaline too.

Going on a rollercoaster would be pretty dull too (not that I go on them cos I hate it)

So yes we need it and yes it serves a purpose.

I once experienced appropriate panic when caught in a whiteout on a mountain. The ground and trails were heavily covered & a blizzard had come in bringing visibility down to zero. My mind was racing with options. Do i dig into a sheltered spot & ride it out. Do I descend directly (unknown steepness) & my body was loaded with adrenaline. The difference was that as fast as i could produce adrenaline i was using it up to get off of the mountain. As I got lower & out of danger it subsided and turned into relief & this is what really suprised me confidence. I suppose i at least got to see panics useful function once. :)

Before I even had panic attacks I was in a car crash a few years ago.
Noone was hurt at all but my body was just loaded with adrenaline.
When I got up out the car the surroundings seemed surreal and I felt really faint and dizzy.
I also remember I couldn't think clearly and my whole body felt really stiff and heavy to move like I was frozen.
These physical symptoms would have made it almost impossible for me to fight or run

It would have been the adrenaline that got you up out of the car Xavier, and being in a car when it crashes would produce massive amounts of it, and the dizziness would be a result of that as well as any knocks you might have taken. Just because you got up and walked away from it doesn't mean you didn't suffer from the impact of the crash, and that would have made it virtually impossible to run. Adrenaline helps you to fight or run when needed yes, but that's not always possible but that doesn't mean its not still bombing around your body, and in that situation it certainly would have been, even though you couldn't run. Fear can make you freeze too, so adrenaline's not always about movement. We do need it believe me. But with anxious people its produced with nowhere to go so we get all the symptoms and don't know what to do with them because we can't see the reason.

Nope. I wasn't injured at all. The dizziness was the same feeling I've now come to recognise which I get from panic attacks which adrenaline causes.

I felt all all frozen in the car as well before I got out.
It felt like a mammoth effort just to open the door and get up, and I just sat there frozen for 2 or 3 minutes before I even did.

Maybe something just doesn't work properly on me, but I honestly think adrenaline is awful in any kind of dangerous situation, and the symptoms make it 10x harder to focus and actually physically do anything.

I found it useful on 2 occasions:

1) A gun pointed at my face when I worked in an offlicense
2) Mauled by a dog (managed to have the strength and courage to punch it in the face!)

Whoa, scary stuff. Hope you're not too badly messed up.

Personally I think adrenalin has its uses but for normal, everyday life - naaaahhh. Anxiety sucks and I hate my brain.

Cheers

Adrenalin can have very negative effects on us, I got diagnosed with 'borderline' underactive thyroid and the doctors put me on 25mg Levothyroxine then what I thought was my menopause was my last pregnancy so instead of assesing my case individually I got put in the 'pregnant woman' catagory i'd already just had a blood test done on the 25mg and even the specialist commented and said your adrenalin is something like in the 2000's (not a clue what it meant)I said is that high he replied ohhh yes over the fence the field and beyond! then still he still decided to stick me on 100mg Levothyroxine that ALL pregnant woman go on, well this ended up making my adrenalin shoot through the roof as well as sending my metabolism into overdrive, I lost a lot of weight whilst pregnant, baby stopped growing at 30weeks so was delivered a month early he was just 3lb 3oz then everything hit me like a brick I got high blood pressure, hypertension the worst panic/anxiety attacks of my life, I had to take baby to the clinic and I do not know to this day how I got there and back but the journey back was bad, my legs where like jelly, heart thumping so hard I thought it was going to bounce out my chest there was sweat pumping out of me and I was shaking uncontrollably, I had to lean against a wall clutching on to the pram like my life depended on it I rang my husband who was at work crying for him to help me, my daughter was with me but I think I scared the life out of her, well my husband just said Take deep breaths and keep saying in your head...I can do it, i'll be ok, i'm not going to die! he stayed on the phone until I eventually got home because I went the longest way to avoid traffic and people seeing me, Its taken me months to try and get near enough back to normal but every now and then the panic/anxiety sets in and I fear everything.
Sorry it was a long post but that was my worst experience of way too much adrenalin caused by the doctors, to be honest I did'nt need the 25mg thyroid tablet 'borderline' is neither here nor there so to stick me on 100mg because I was pregnant was ridiculous and un-professional seeing as the 25mg was more than enough....It was only when I was in hospital reading a magazine article that I realised how lucky both me and baby where. So now I don't always trust the specialists!
Our little boy has just turned one, still small for his age but doing fine, me well i'm still trying to put a bit of the weight back on and just take each day as it comes, i'm not on the thyroid tablets anymore so thats a plus! just Propranolol to keep me calm.

hi
there are many ways to beat this condision .
I have had panic attacks for 12 years .
I tried everything but it came down to me standing up to myself in the end .
You have to belive that you are stronger than the attacks .
I know they are scary and I know that you fell like your dying , but your not and they do pass.
Try to let it pass over you like a wave , the attack will happen but the more you fight it the worse it my feel .breath deep and try to let it pass .
this may help you as well http//tinyurl.com/2w5ngap
