I have heard that beta blockers are more about controling the heart rate whereas anti depressants are for the chemical imbalance in the brain. i need to find out more though. can anyone advise on this?

I was taking citalopram for depression, as i thot this is what was going on, on and off since my daughter was born in98. after finding this site i now firmly know that i have had anxiety for this whole time. I know it might seem stupid, but the doctor has never actually evaluated me, just given me tablets to go and take with no other support or advice. 7 years ago this started!! im getting angry just thinking about it now, sorry.

The meds i was on, anti depressants. did slightly help to a degree, but it didnt stop my highs and lows, just the lows werent as low as they had been. i decided last year to stop taking them and have not suffered anymore than i was on them.

I was also prescribed betablockers but was advised by my nurologist not to take them. He has just put me on an anti depressant called mirtazapine (zispin). I start taking them tonight but it is very fraustrating knowing what is the best thing to take.
As far as i know betablockers are used for heart conditions but can also help control the physical symptoms of anxiety eg, shakes, racing heart etc.
Have a good read here at no more panic, i have got lots of info from here,

Take care Karlie xx

Betablockers can stop the cycle of fast heart rate and breathlessness so for some can control their worst symptoms but won't relieve the initial fears .

Several SSRIs are also licenced for anxiety as well as depression and Yes do deal with the chemical stucture.

Neither are a single cure for anxiety but in conjunction with some talking therapy can help you.
