jackie, i think the lack of sleep one is one that many on this site can relate to. the problem is you have a few sleepless nights, then you fear you will never sleep again and so the cycle of fear begins. there is too much pressure on the body to sleep, and pressure brings tension and no sleep

also many fear sleep in case they do not wake up.

jackie this is just a fear, just like our fears during the day affect our lives this one affects you night time. fears are not reality though. have you tried anything herbal in the past to help with the anxiety

im sure there are many people who can speak of this better than me, but have you read claire weekes book on how to overcome our anxieties and fears. how to cope with our problems by just accepting them and letting time pass without tension until sleep comes.

i know this probably wont help but i really find this book a godsend

you are not alone and i know many will relate to your fears

YOu are in a fear of the fear cycle and are now scaring yourself so much that your bosy is loathe to put itself in a position of what it seems as potential danger.

Relaxation cds
Good routine
something herbal eg valarian
Yoga

may all help you break that cycle.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Hi Jackie,

You didn't say whether it is panic/anxiety attacks which are stopping you from sleeping, but from what you've said I'm guessing it's general anxiety about lack of sleep and racing thoughts that are keeping you awake?

I have never been able to sleep - I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever gone to sleep and woken up after 4am. The times it has happened it has freaked me out because I couldn't believe 7 hours could just pass like that. The way I have coped is by reminding myself that my body will sleep when it needs it - I know this isn't always true, but eventually nature will have to kick in and it calms me down - it's something my mother always said to me when I couldn't sleep as a child and just lying in bed means your body is having time to relax. I make sure I have been to the toilet, have had a small drink of very milky hot chocolate and eaten a banana before bed. Keeping a clutter-free room and making sure my bed is made and 'ready to get into' helps. This is all classic 'sleep' advice, but reading a book with a bedside light is a killer when you're trying to stay awake! I've lived with this for so many years that I have learned to just not worry - I try to be content with just being in bed. If you can do regular exercise early evening each day for half an hour or an hour then that will definitely help - easier said than done if you're not that way inclined! If you wake up in the night and think you are just going to start tossing and turning then get up, have a milky drink, go to the toilet and read a few pages of your book again...and just one more thing - don't have a clock be your bedside - clock-watching is the worst thing - set your alarm and put it under the bed or somewhere out of site and leave the curtains open a little you can be a little reassured about roughly what time it is.

Hope this helps but please ignore if off the mark....

Don't expect too much from your body or expect to be like everybody else! And invest in a great duvet!
