View Full Version : Losing faith in doctors

I am losing my faith in doctors extremely fast.

Another doctors appointment today left me wishing i hadn't even bothered going at all.

My regular GP is ok at least she does her best but whenever i see any other doctor there they come across as arrogant and dismissive and i have had enough of it.

I told them that i am having very bad pains in my throat and constant sore throats as well as difficulty swallowing and now i am getting short of breath and chest pains, He was so dismissive like he didn't even want to know, Had a quick look at my throat and that was that.

However i did lose my rag a bit today and told him straight that i am not happy that i am not getting any explanations as to what is going on with me he said that's not what it says on the notes and i said well i wouldn't be asking otherwise would i?

I told him that i am suffering a lot lately and that i don't think enough is being done i don't think he liked that, I am not one for holding back especially when i have had enough and i think it needed to be said.

He said that on the notes from a different doctor it says that some of my symptoms could be down to anxiety! A doctor has never actually said this to my face! But that doesn't reassure me much as i think some of my symptoms could be down to something else.

I seem to be feeling worse everyday and getting new symptoms and nothing is helping me at the moment.

But that's the 2nd doctor i have seen in a week who has come across as uninterested, arrogant and dismissive and it's starting to really annoy me.

If i were to ever find out that something seriously wrong with me and they have been ignoring my problems and been dismissive and after all their dithering i would sue them for every penny and get the place shut down.

I doubt very much if that would ever happen .But youd be entitled if that were the case .Dont you think they are aware of that ? do you seriously think they would risk that happening ? I dont . sue

unfortunately, most doctors will never have personally experienced anxiety for themselves and probably reckon sufferers are just wasting their time!! They just do not realise how dibillitating symptoms can be. Much as I'm sure you'd love to shut the place down, being realistic, there probably is nothing physically wrong with you, and you won't have the grounds to carry this out lol!! I myself have experienced sore throats lasting months and I was convinced I was a gonna!!..... still here 30 years later........ it just went away!

It strikes me that the problem is it is a vicious cycle.

The doctors by what they have written, or at least one of them, thinks that your symptoms are predominantly anxiety driven, but for some unknown reason they are not verbalising that to you, which is totally the wrong thing to do, and to send you for test upon test just to placate your worries is clearly doing the EXACT OPPOSITE as the understanding that you then have is something must be wrong as they are sending me for tests, and so it goes on.

It is frankly unprofessional on their part and bad healthcare.

They must surely see hundreds of mental health patients and should know their actions serve no good purpose in this situation.

Hi there, i too have experienced GP who basically put every symptom you have down to anxiety ( on once tried to convince my UTI was due to anxiety). In my job i meet lots of patients who meet GP's who simply do not understand anxiety or can be down right rude. My best advice would be to ask around friends/ family for any GP who is good with Mental health problems- or you could ask the receptionist if there is a GP who is specialises in that area. I have thankfully found a fantastic GP now who not only has a very good understanding of anxiety but is extremely empathatic. Good luck in your hunt xx

I take the point about GP's being insensitive and often unfair to anxiety sufferers and I'm aware that this happens all too often.

However..I'm not sure there is any point in suggesting that someone look for a new GP sympathetic to Mental Health problems if the patient is utterly convinced that there problem is not caused by anxiety and HAS to be of a pathological origin?

Of course they are probably aware of it, I'm just saying for example if i found out in the future that i had cancer or MND and they had ignored my problems and symptoms and just blamed it all on anxiety and it turned out some of the problems were down to something else then yes i wouldn't hesitate to sue them but everyone else would probably do the same thing.

Hopefully it would never come to that.

I totally agree ladybird.

That is what I was trying to say in my last post, in that GP's seem to miss the point entirely when dealing with anxiety/ HA sufferers. The bulk of their care should not be about perpetuating that patients anxieties by doing test upon test with the belief that this will 'reassure the patient', they should be enabling the patient to understand the power of their anxiety and tackling those issues primarily, unless they WHOLEHEARTEDLY concur with the patient that they may well have an actual physical illness. Someone has to draw the line, and as the doctor, they should be the ones to say ' have you considered that this is your anxiety?'
