i'm not sure what first triggered my anxiety, but i have now worked out that it is now still affecting me because i keep dwelling on the thoughts of having a heart attack. I know there is nothing wrong with me (physically), i have been to the doctors and had tests done. I just don't seem to be able to snap myself out of this way of thinking. I still worry about going to sleep on a night, just in case i don't wake up the next day. i know deep down that its anxiety, its just the symptoms seem to real.

Does anyone have any tips on how to change my way of thinking? I have tried the to forget the pains and stuff, does anyone have any tips?

I'm awaiting an appointment from the psyciatric nurse, hopefully that will help to get me back on the right path.

I have never been an anxious poerson before - I had a panic attack in the pictures and it has gone from there (2 months ago). Since then i have dwelled on the chest pains. They now appear to be getting worse, but the doctors have assured me nothing is wrong. (been 9 times, so i assume it would have been picked up on).

Read Strawberrie's posting about "Great Book on Health Anxiety" (3rd March). I have got this and am finding it very helpful.

babe,i too go to sleep afraid that i am not going to wake the next day,as if i am going to die in my sleep..how awful that is to think that way hay, but we do.. its because while we are awake we feel we have controlover ourselfs dont we, we dont when we sleep .. we have to leave that in the capable hands of god, really so then we dont have control.
But to be honest we dont have control atall do we when we are in this situation ..its anxiety that is controlling us right now.. well otherwise we wouldnt be here right.
its about gainging control once agin, and how do we do that, its about retraining our brains in the right way of thinking , and its about patient and time... as it dosnt happen over night...
i hate this all of it, like you.
Defintley counselling, relaxtion, threapy all help in regaining your life and holding the reigns,,, but no one said that was going to be easy... and we would all like that...and RIGHT NOW RIGHT...but it dont happen like that.
In order to change our selfs we have to help our selfs, and thats no way an easy thing, but none of us want to feel this way forever do we love.

Sorry you feel so bad.

Well i have had the weekend from hell.

I have been convinced all weekend that i am dieing. Got myslef that wound up on both days that i ended up in floods of tears.

I know i'm not because i was at the doctors on Friday and was told i was healthy - Got her to listen to my heart again - which was (surprise, surprise) in her words Perfect.

My symptoms seem to be getting worse? I think that this may be due to the st. Johns Wort i'm taking, till it settles down? not sure but i'm trying to look at it more logically.

Going to see the psyciatric nurse on 31st March. Couple of weeks yet.

well after my days from hell at the weekend i have been back to the docs yesterday (saw the doc i consider the best in the surgury), he reasurred me that all my problems are anxiety based, he recommend stopping the st. johns wort and to start taking Citalopram in a few days time, i'm goning to give it till
Friday then start them (i think).

I lost the plot at work on Monday afternoon. Just started crying convinced i was going to die because my chest was tight and a few pains here and there.

Today my heart is racing, i keep getting really warm and sweaty, i'm also short of breath, just keep crying. Convinced that because my chest feels tight i'm having some sort of heart problem (dosn't help that my heart is racing).

Hopefully when i see this women on Friday it will help.

Ditto from what Axel said! Whether you're a Brit, an American, or an alien from Neptune, CBT is very effective! :)

I sympathise with you, I used to be a very laid back person but I've suffered anxiety for the past 2 years or so. Mine was caused by me suddenly having bad headaches and dizziness which I thought was something serious after looking up the symptoms on the internet. I found that having tests done helped as it put my mind at rest, for a good while anyway. I had an ECG done recently as I had a racing heart, came back normal. Maybe you should have this done.

Greg,

Sorry about your worries..but well there are many of us out there that are worried about their hearts.. i worry day in and day out.I can hear mine..every missed beat ,extra beat, double beat, or burp or hicup.I have obsessed so much that i have pissed off two cardiologist and talked to many many cardilogist and regular doctors and ran off two good friends that are nurses but have seen two doctors that dont seem to think i have issues..As a matter of fact the first one I called back to ask about a mumur I had and the doctor wouldnt even call me back ,had the assistant call me back ..thats really nice of them..that makes you feel crazy .The doctor that told you that you had a murmur wont even bother to call you back.I worry still but have started reading taoist text online about overcoming fear of death and overcoming fear..it helps a little.I got online and googled overcoming fear..there are alot of self help material there that is really common sense ..its funny although it does not promote a religion it promotes facing fears and detaching from things and people or situtations..I keep text in word that i take from these sites and read them over and over at night before I go to bed..some use visualizations some use thoughts other use positive things..I take a little of all of them.. and read them..For the most part it makes us come to terms that we all are going to die..it also says that most people dont prepare early in life that they deny it all their life and say its not going to happen to me and then it does and its terrifying. It tells you how to face fears and compares our lives to a reality of dreams..saying that when you dream you face a fear and then wake with knowing it was just a dream..It tells you how to face life with knowing that our reality is nothing more than a dream and our minds can convince our concious that the fears that we have are no more than the fears in our dreams..It also says that the way we live has a lot to do with how we feel about death..It says that fear is the cancer of the soul..and it talks about courage is not the absence of fear but doing things that need to be done although you are afraid..There are many such quotes out there even from 500 bc. Just like i said if any of this interest you just google overcoming fear and it will lead you to some buddist zen ,taoist, and also just self help that might make you relax before going to bed. It helps me and I have cardiac neurosis as one cardiologist so bluntly told me.. but hey we all have our bad points..

Hi Looking, I love taoist stuff and that's why I tout cbt because it is all about exercises that teach you how to live in the here and now. You may want to read the book about overcoming anxiety we used in my cbt group called Been there, done that? DO THIS! by Sam Obitz it is a short book and outlines the tea form exercise that has given me the most relief and has a few other helpful exercises in it to stop your worrying. Take care and good luck.

CBT and the TEA form exercise are the best for eliminating your anxieties whether they are health related or general anxiety and panic.

Hi,:)
I heard a great sermon recently all about worry. Basically the preacher said that part of our brain is called the mendibular or something like that and it is like an excited teenager and that the front part of our brain is like a policeman and this regulates whether our mendibular is overeacting or not. However, with excess worry the mendibular can become extremely hot and the policeman goes to sleep. He also said that worries are like black baloons and yellow balloons are the good things that God has for us and there are about four yellow baloons to every black baloon, but what we tend to do is grab hold of the black baloons and let the yellow ones go by and he suggested just letting the black baloons float past when they come. However, the best part was when he suggested what he called the Worry Capsule and basically what you do is every time something starts to trouble you then you write it down on a peice of paper, once you write it on the paper you refuse to think about it and you set a specific time of the day say 6pm and at 6pm you can worry about everything you wrote down throughout the day on your peice of paper for about 7 minutes and you have to spend this time worrying as much as you can, then after 7 minutes you refuse to think about it again. When I tried this I wrote down 75 worries over two days and spent my time doing constructive things and even the worrying for 7 minutes was quite good fun. I likened it to casting your cares upon the Lord because he care for you. It really does work and I've found that most of the things that I write on my list get dealt with and I don't enter a situation with the same level of anxiety, but I find that a way has been made for me to cope with the situation. Also I found that as I write the things down a yoke was beginning to break off of my core that was strangling me. It really puts you in control of your thoughts instead of your thoughts being in control of you. So, just to recap:-

1) Write every worry on a piece of paper as they come.
2) Set aside a specific time of day to do your worrying.
3) Worry as much as possible for 7 minutes about everything on your list. (He suggested setting aside two sessions to start with to get you used to it, but I didn't find that necessary).
4) Stop thinking about the things on your list after the 7 minutes is over.
:yesyes:

Interesting approach.... I don't know if that would work as well as directly countering them and correcting them in the TEA form exercise but it certainly may be helpful for some.
