Hi there, havent used a forum like this so a little unsure what to say. Have been suffering from serious anxiety for the last month. Seen a councillor and seeing another specialist next week. Doc prescribed citalopram which ive been on for less than a month. was on lorazepam which helped but switched to clonazepam which i find useless. Saw doctor today and she didnt want to prescribe lorazepam again. Feeling very anxious at the moment and unsure what to do. I know medication is not the answer and am persuing other treatments. I just feel I need something to calm me down at the moment as it seems to be getting worse. any advice appreciated.

Hi there, sorry you are struggling at the moment. I think some GP's are more cautious than others in regards to prescribing benzo's due to fear of addiction. Who is the mental health specialist you are seeing at the moment? Could you be referred to a psychiatrist? They are the specialists in medication and much better trained in that area the GP's. I do understand what you saying, and although you should try other anxiety helping techniques first, such as relaxation etc, I understand what it feels like to think nothing will help other than medication. I remember when I was in crisis and ended up at a and e and the nurse there suggested relaxation techniques and I nearly laughed in there face... when you are anxious about being in your mind no amount of relaxation will help. So could you get an apt with a different GP, or go back and see the one you saw. I know you have to be careful with benzos but also it is not wise to stop taking them abruptly. best of wishes x
