Overbreathing is so common with anxiety sufferers that we actually begin hyperventilating constantly sometimes instead of breathing normally. I didn't even realise I was hyperventilating until my boyfriend pointed out that I only breathed in and out for like 2 seconds, if even. My psychiatrist also noticed it and told me that hyperventilating does worsen anxiety and cause a lot of tension in the body. I've since taken up meditation and yoga and it's been an amazing help for me. You should try it. They specifically focus on breathing :) You can even go to classes that are anxiety related that help you use meditation to control your breathing in situations thast cause anxiety.

Hyperventilation does not only worsen anxiety, it also causes it. Everybody is aware of the acute kind but not many people are aware of the chronic type not even doctors. Chronic hyperventilation is an evil subtle change in your breathing rate over an extended period that usually causes panic attacks and a myriad of strange and unsettling symptoms and sensations that upsets every body system.
Your body basically is starving of oxygen due in part to the alkalinity of your blood due to the over breathing. It eventually overtime can lead to exercise intolerance, fatigue, maladaptive stress response and many other things.
It is fairly difficult to treat but basically it is done through specialised breathing techniques and mediation over an extended period but it's origin comes from stress so every time you get any major stress in your life then you are always at risk of getting it again but with the available tools you can at least keep it under control.
