Hi Guys,
I've been on citalopram for quite a long while....I'm on 40 mg.....during that time, I never tried to have sex as I was in no fit state to be in a relationship. Now, I'm fine and have been told I can reduce the dose gradually.
Problem is, I have a really nice girlfriend who wants to have sex with me.....I can't maintain an erection!!! I was already preparing myself to reduce to 20 mg......will this help these problems?
I still get erections at night, and it's not like I can't get them atall, but not to the degree that I could have intercourse.
My girlfriend has been very patient with me(thank god) and I have explained what I believe to be the cause.
It's been 2 years without sex while I battled with depression caused by ANOTHER medication.......now I'm pretty much back the way I was.......please somebody tell me what I can do!!!

thanks!

It sounds to me that you are suffering from a bout of anxiety which is really affecting you, as well as the physical problems. But I would suggest to see if you can overcome the anxiety at least.

Here's a useful article that may be able to assist you with overcoming the problem. http://www.ultimate-herbal.com/ED_Erection_Problems_Solved.aspx

Best of luck!

When I was first prescribed Citalopram, I did a bit of research and read the side-effects often include sexual dysfunction (impotency & inability to orgasm) and so I asked my GP for an alternative, and he changed my prescription. I still find I have a loss of libido, but not sure whether that is the meds or the underlying depression.

Talk to your GP, explain the problem, and ask if a change of meds might help.

Hi guys, I'm glad to have found this thread and hope thiings work out for you Mr SOft. I'm not trying to hijack the thread here but I'm new and not sure how to start a new one !!
Anyhoo, I'm 36 and have had anxiety and depression on and off for about 8 years. I have been prescribed cipralex among other things which i don't remember the name of. About a year ago, i decided to stop taking all medication, against the advice of my doctor. However I think I made the right decision and have been on top of things since then with a new job, new flat and a renewed interest in living.
My problem is that I still have erectile problems which I had associated with the medication. I have been deliberately single for over five years but have recently met someone who I really like but I have been backing off because I'm not sure how she would take this situation, I know she enjoys sex. I can get an erection, (like you, Mr Soft) in the night or first thing in the morning and I usually have no problems masturbating, but on the few occasions I have ended up with a girl, the wee man has just been totally dead. I don't know, therefore if this is a physical symptom or a psychological one ( My depression was deeply linkede to a difficult break up in the past).
I would appreciate if anyone can give me some advice, I find it difficult to talk to my GP, especially after I stopped taking my meds against his wishes. Has anyone else had similar problems or do you know of any remedies? I am so keen to start a relationship with this woman.
Thankyou guys for reading :))

Mr. Soft. I have sympathy with your predicament and I'm suffering the same difficulties on 20 mg of Citalopram so I am doubtful there will be any improvement when you reduce to this level (but I hope there is for you). On the subject of changing to another medication I can only say that I have suffered this probelm on every anti-depressive I have been on (fluoxetine, gamanil, dutonin, reboxetine, venlafaxine) although slightly less on venlafaxine. However there seems to have been an improvement the times I have forgotten to take a pill, so full or improved functioning seems to return quite quickly. Maybe you could work it out like that. Good Luck

Guys, this thread was started in march 2006. I would hope that Mr. Soft has been able to change his name by now
