In 2004 I was put on trazodone. Over the years I was on varying doses from 50mg to 200mg. They certainly lifted my mood and helped me.

However, over the years I developed 3 main health issues: digestive problems, extreme exhaustion and worst of all, choking after eating. I kept seeing my GP but he did nothing- in fact, I think he didn't believe me, i.e. he's 'mentally ill' so just humour him, etc.

The choking occurs after eating any kind and any amount of food. It ruins my life.....it dominates it.

Eventually he referred me to see a specialist late last year who suggested that perhaps the trazodone was causing my problems. He told me to gradually come off them. So, over a period of a month or so I came off them. The last pill was taken on 31st Dec 2010.

Since then, I have been much, much less tired, my digestion has improved up to 80% and I have not had the choking effect once. Not even a little bit. I can now eat more normally and can function.

My GP said 'oh yeah, they can cause those problems'. Why didn't he tell me that before? I begged him almost on a monthly basis over the past 7 years to let me stop taking them and he just wouldn't.

Of course, a/ds work extremely well for most people. But, if you are suffering with side-effects in silence........please consider that the a/ds may be the cause.

Has anyone else had such problems?

Not those same issues, but when we were trying to find the right thing for me, I had a really bad experience with Lexapro. That antidepressant helps a lot of folks, but it just made everything worse for me.

It's terrible that your doctor did not take you seriously and just dismissed you like that. I went through a couple of doctors before finding my present one. He never talks down to me and always seems to take whatever I tell him seriously. The more I hear about indifferent physicians, the more I realize just how lucky I am to have my doctor.

I dont get the choking but do get a lot of acid indigestion .Ive been taking Citalopram and it s definately the cause of it .Its helped me enormously so am reluctant to change .Im currently cutting down anyway .My Dr said he could give me something else ,but im not going to bother now .Ive heard a lot of people complain of the same thing so its pretty common .If its definately something you cant tolerate its worth insisting on a change of medication .You have to weigh things up as sometimes you will find most drugs will cause something . Glad you got it sorted out in the end ,Sue x

Thanks for the replies.

I had the acid reflux, too. I was thinking one day that my symptoms only started when I began taking the trazodone. Now I realise the link is clear.
