Hi im new here and could really do with some advice.
I been suffering with anxiety problems for about a year now and im not sure what to do. Iv always been slightly shy but but in the past year i seem to have got really bad. I always think i need a stiff drink before go out in a group, and i get paranoid that people know how nervous im feeling and are judging me. Iv resontly become unemployed and it is defiantly affecting the way i behave in interviews. I just feel nervous all the time.

Should i be goin to the doctors about it?

any advice you guys have would be great thank. x

Hi and :welcome:

Whether or not you go to the docs is really up to you. There are several ways to treat anxiety. You can usually self-refer to a CCBT course (depending on where you are in the country) which will involve self-treating with cognitive behavioural therapy (advised by most docs for anxiety). CBT is also available at online sites like livinglifetothefull.com and moodgym.anu.edu.au. There are also many self-help books to teach you CBT.

CBT is usually the first line of response to anxiety, but some people prefer psychoanalysis and you'd have to go to a doc to be referred for that. If you want to see a CBT therapist (if the online sites/books don't work) then you need to be referred by your doc. But be warned, you could wait up to 18 months to see anyone on the NHS.

If you feel that it is becoming too difficult to function - can't work/socialise/find that you are self-medicating with alcohol too much - if things are really falling apart, or you are too ill to engage with therapy (cannot concentrate enough or are just not getting the benefit) then you could speak to your doctor who may prescribe some medication for the short term.

Hope this helps :)

Hi SummerRain

I found it hard to go to the doctors, but I'm so glad they did. My doc is great and is the one person who really understands how awful it is to be anxious all the time. If you can bring yourself to do it I would definitely recommend it.
