Propanolol belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-blockers. Beta-blockers are used primarily in controlling blood pressure and heart failure but also has a place in treating anxiety, panic and migraines.

In anxiety is works by controlling the pounding/racing heart beat which also helps the breathless feelings.

This drug is not habit forming and may be taken for months or even years.

Benefits Seen:

From the first day to a week, depending on severity of disorder.

If Stop Taking:

Do not stop without consulting your doctor and never abruptly if have been taking this drug for an extended period. (While being discontinued, some people have reported vivid dreams and nightmares).

Overdose symptoms include:

Confusion, changes in heart beat, difficulty breathing, discoloring of fingernails/palms, loss of consciousness, sleepiness, seizures.

Warnings:

  • Do not take this drug if you are pregnant.
  • Do not take this drug if planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not take if you are breast-feeding.
  • Do not give this drug to children. If over sixty there may be an increase in side effects and may lower blood pressure to a point where it becomes easy to fall after standing up.
  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Tell your doctor if you have any respiratory illnesses before use.

 

Inform your doctor if:

  • You had negative reactions to a beta-blocker in the past.
  • If you have low blood pressure
  • If you have diabetes.
  • If you have severe allergies.
  • If you have asthma.
  • If you have chronic pulmonary disease or severe heart disease.
  • If you have kidney/liver problems or if you have a history of heart problems.
  • If you are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drug.
  • If you plan to be under anesthesia or having any surgery in the next few months, also if you will be under-going any medical tests.
  • If you are diabetic or on a special diet (low-salt/low-sugar or any other).
