The return of the panic attack

Hello. I'm new to this forum, but I could sure do with some advice and support!

I had a panic attack yesterday - the first one for 2 years - and it scared the living daylights out of me. It was at work. Its always work that stresses me out. I'm a lawyer and some days I feel I can do the job and some days I am just filled with the most awful doubts and fears and just want to run away. 2 years ago I had a breakdown through stress with full blown panic attacks - the works. Now I fear that I am going down the same road again. I don't know what to do. I wonder if I should get a less pressurised job, but then I get the feeling that I would find something to panic about in everything!!

I hate how I feel at the moment. Everyone on the outside says I'm doing great, but on the inside, I'm a jibbering wreck. And I know its a spiral thing that the more I worry, the less I talk to people about my worries, the more I try to cover up, the worse it gets, until I do make an error or upset someone. I wish more than anything that you could buy confidence pills on the NHS!!!!

Anyway, I'm determined to get back on track again and was thinking about hypnotherapy. What do people think about hypnotherapy?

Any other good quick fixes to help me face work tomorrow?

Sorry to hear the dreaded panic is with you again.
Personally i dont think hypnotherapy does much good for panic but if you think it could help then give it a go.
What made them go away last time?
This is proberbly the answer for you this time too.
The advice i have had and the books i have read have made me believe that the key to recovery is not to try and get rid of panic attacks/anxiety but to realise that they cannot hurt you and they cant stop you performing.
Not an easy task at all and i am still struggling myself.

Hi Vulcan,

I'm doing hypnothearapy at the mo, it seems to be helping but will let you know when i get back off hols on the 11th April.

Ylang Ylang is quite good for relaxing and PA's, dont use it too much thought as it can give you headaches.

Hi Vulcan, I have been through a similar pattern to you. I won't ramble on about myself, but hopefully I can offer you some advice!
I had one bout of depression/panic a year and a half ago which I got over even though I never thought I would. Then out of the blue I started getting panic attacks in January. This cost me my job and I hit rock bottom, skint, afraid, spending hours wandering around, trying to avoid everyone incase I had another attack and been unable to go shopping incase I had an attack.
Then I got help, it is up to you which direction to go, I got a life coach, she has been invaluable to me and has helped me to slowly regain my confidence.
She helped me decide what 'worked' for me with my panic - I can explain a bit more if you like.
Then yesterday I went to see a homeopath/herbalist, this was another turning point for me. He spoke so much sense - he says that my initial attacks were probably due to blood sugar levels - then the following attacks are probably psycological due to the fear of having one. He has really helped me and today I feel myself again. Both the herbalist and life coach have taught me the importance of postitive thinking, it's not something to be brushed under the carpet - it's very important.
Your work sounds very stressful, perhaps you need to take a holiday to rest and think? Being anxious makes you really tired. Admiting how you feel, is the first step to recovery.
You need to look after yourself, to look after YOU, don't forget who you are, don't forget to fulfil your dreams, don't forget to dream....
