Songs/Music that says it better than you can
Last night I was chilling and listening to music. I have SO many songs saved on Youtube and I listen to them often. I came across this one and it still brings a tear to my eyes. I first heard this song when my wife was ill with a very rare form of encephalitis. I nearly lost her. The lyrics in this song describe what I felt during her illness and spending the evenings with her in the hospital until she was given her meds and she went to sleep then driving 90 miles home to try and get some sleep before getting up and doing it over and over and over.
Tim Chaisson - The Healing
What song or music describe an experience or feeling better than you can describe in words?

Another one from that time and says more than I can describe in words. First heard on the TV show scrubs. I became big fans of The Weepies - World Spins Madly On
It's amazing how music can help heal the soul.

And yet another one.... Sorry... Just listening to music. My wife is doing some OT at the school she works as a substitute teacher. Yes, the same woman who was in adult diapers and had to learn to walk and talk again. Miraculous TBH.
David Hodges & Rita Wilson (writers) - Til You're Home - From the movie 'A Man Called Otto' with Tom Hanks (highly recommended). Hearing this song brought back those memories vividly and helped me appreciate what I have regardless of what that horrible illness took from my wife and I.
Check out David Hodges solo version.

I remember you going through all of that with your wife FMP. It truly is a miracle.
This is a favourite of mine. Although it's been covered by many artists and originally written by Charlie Chaplin, I've plumped for Nat King Cole.
I listen to this if I feel sad.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
I'm a John Denver fan, these two are probably my favorites: Looking for Space (as evidenced by my signature, haha) and Come and Let Me Look in Your Eyes.
When I was in high school and had really bad health anxiety, Move Along by All American Rejects was popular and I remember thinking of it as a bit of an anthem to just keep going even when I felt like I was at the end (maybe a bit dramatic).
I know I'll think of more.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
Came across this one. Another song from the TV show Scrubs and one I perform in my show. Having a daughter with severe mental illness, this song hits home. When I perform this song, I dedicate to parents in the audience who have a daughter in their lives. I've had little girls who were with their parents come up to the stage to listen and I got to sing these words to them right in front of me :) Just sharing a bit of who I am as a person and being a musician, this is the best way to describe me. I'm curious as to what music or songs strike the heart of others here. When words fail, music speaks and offers insight into the heart and mind of the listener.
I haven't performed since January of 2020 when the pandemic hit. Things are beginning to open up and gigs are available. My guitar has been in the case for most of the last 4 years. My plan is to get 'Marti' out of her case, get practicing and get my butt back out there. Life has become monotonous with work and all and I need an outlet. That and I need to record some of my stuff and put it out there on FB and Youtube. Anyway, you can sense a theme in what I've posted and this is the type of show I do except solo. In my show, I do a 'mini-set' of songs from the TV show Scrubs and this is one of them. Season 5 - Episode 2

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
I'm throwing in another classic...
This one is so powerful. It's uplifting, emotional and for me gives a certain amount strength to the soul.
It was also in the top ten chart position of all time.
Enough said.

You've got me digging them out now FMP.
This song has been a great uplift for struggling, getting through the day / night, feeling alone, facing fears, worry...
Also helping to sleep when feeling anxious...

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
This next song was written by a brilliant songwriter in my opinion. And the one I have chosen is a song I used to sing to my mum and basically drive her mad (not literally).
I love his lyrics and it's hard to choose the one that stands out as his best so in the end I chose the one that reminded me of mum and I in the kitchen and me singing to her while she rolled her eyes, lol.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
I lost a dear friend of over 40 years over the summer. He called me to tell me he was stopping treatment for kidney/liver failure and going into hospice. That same day, I was watching some cute/funny dog/cat video and this song was the sound track. It caught my ear and I looked up some of the lyric and discovered Loving Caliber - The Rivers Gonna Cry When You're Gone

Ahhh yes... Cat Stevens and Paul Simon. Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel) was one of the biggest influences in my musical career as was 'Cat'/Yusef. I do a mini set of Paul and 'Cat' in my show. In fact, the very first LP I ever owned was 'Wednesday Morning 3am' by Simon and Garfunkel.

Poppy, I've never listened to John Denver, I'm going to have a listen.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
Lots of good ones, Carnation! I really like Simon and Garfunkel as well; my mom was cleaning house a couple of years back and gave me a bunch of her and my dad's old records and they were big fans. We have good songs today too, but I feel like that era of music was really soulful.
Hope you enjoy some John Denver, he's got some really great ones that are less popular (but his popular hits are great too). We used to listen to his music a lot growing up, especially on family road trips, so it's always been comforting to me. But recently I've noticed a lot of his lyrics really hit home.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
I had an interesting day. I work in fraud for a major financial company and to say my job is stressful is an understatement. I'm thankful for the opportunity at my age but it knocks the poo out of me most days. I had a good day today though. I had my yearly review and exceeded expectations. Come bonus time, that's going to be a nice chunk of change :yesyes: I have a couple of years until retirement and despite the stress, I'm looking forward to 'Better Days - Goo Goo Dolls'

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
Have you ever been in a relationship where you love each other dearly but know it's just not the time and it's not going to work? I have. I recall this song when I was going through that situation in my life and it says it better than I ever could. Graham Nash and Joni Mitchell were a couple at the time and both of them wrote about their feelings. This version from Graham Nash really nails it. And when David Crosby walks on and does the harmony? *chills*

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
We all have those times when we sit and reflect on our lives, the decisions we've made, the experiences and events etc. and feel a longing in our hearts and a very different type of 'what if?' comes to our minds. As I'm getting older, I've found myself struggling with the reality of time. I'm so very fortunate. Having survived physical issues that would have taken most, I'm very blessed. And not just physically. With those health problems came financial issues. I basically started over in my fifties. My wife and I had married in 2014 and both of us had nothing. Seriously, it was paycheck to paycheck and we had both filed bankruptcies. Now, here we are nearly ten years later, we have good jobs, paid off debt, built our credit, bought the home we'd been renting for ten years and actually have some savings. While we don't live extravagantly by any means, we can afford a meal out a few times a month and a few days away traveling to see family or something we'd like to do or see.
And that, looking at the positives as opposed to the negatives and dwelling on 'what if's' is the key. I've said here that the biggest regrets we have are the things we didn't do due to fear. At least if you try, you'll have that in your back pocket as a pat on the back if you fail and failing is a part of life. The 'Positive Thoughts' thread is an example of a habit to keep Positive Thoughts in the front of your mind and make a concerted effort to put the negativity aside. Since my 30's, when I divorced and my life took a very different path, there were challenges. One of the things I did to help me keep a positive attitude was read a Positive Thought or quote. I subscribed to a website I found and have been getting Positive Quotes every day in my email. I've post most of those here over the last 8 years. I would even take a sticky and write it down, stick it to the bathroom mirror so I'd see it every time I went that day ;)
I've been a Colin Hay fan since his Men at Work days and have had the opportunity to see him perform solo several times. Truly, one of my favorite artists. I perform several of his songs in the "Scrubs" mini set I do. I play a 'mini-set' of songs from the TV show Scrubs. Colin and his music were featured on the show. This song was in one of the episodes and speaks to the subject I'm speaking of. What's really interesting are the mindset of the storytellers. Colin is expressing his thoughts and then he sings the words of his partner who tells him to 'open up your heart, let the light shine in' (the positive thought) and his response is the title of the song. Makes you wonder what that 'real life' really is doesn't it? Is there even a definition or is it just inner peace?
Waiting For My Real Life to Begin - Colin Hay

EDIT: I've come realize that music for me is therapy and self help. Listening and performing allows me to get the reassurance I seek and be able to express myself and my feelings. That said, there have been times I've sought help in the form of real life therapy and meds but music has been the real life saver for me. What's your lifesaver? Grab onto it with both hands and help yourself.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
That's a very deep post fishman.
Music has been my saviour too. Listening and playing. And so much that my soul partner is a musician. Lol.
I have the radio on the background most days. Music in the car. I listen to one of my CDs to suit my mood. I'm drawn to shops with music playing. I often choose a music documentary to watch on TV or something music related.
Music can lift my spirits, give me courage, make me smile, and make me remember.
Thank goodness for music.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
One of my favorite artists is Peter Gabriel. I got to see him on the last tour before he left Genesis and went solo. I've seen him several times solo and was at the Secret World Live show when they came through back in the 90's (that was an absolutely incredible show! Check out the videos). This is the last song I do in my 'Songs from the TV show Scrubs' mini-set. It's from the last episode and final season of Scrubs (the show did continue for another season but the main characters were gone and it wasn't the same and went off the air). JD was finishing his residency and leaving the hospital. The video captures the hopes and dreams of his future. We've all been standing at the open door of our future and in many ways, do it every day.
I sang this to my wife when we married and this song holds a very special place in my heart. Those of you who know that kind of love and bond will understand why.
The last scene from Scrubs
This is a lot like the version I do.

Re: Songs/Music that says it better than you can
I want to share my solo CD I released in 2011. All the songs hold a very special place in heart. It also shows my heart. I've gotten a lot a flack lately about my replies but if you look at my history, it's the same now as it was then. You'll know more about me but no worries ;) Yes, I don't suffer as severely as most of you suffer but I have suffered and struggled. I've fought the dragon. The difference is I did what I needed to do to get myself on track.
Anyway.... here you go. This song I wrote after my 1st heart attack. I was working in a large church as Creative Arts Director and organized and produced the video, imagery and music for the services. While I was there, we grew to two services on Sunday and one during the week. I left the church after my experience with death and I can tell you first hand, religion is BIG business. The amount of $$ I saw come in during the week was mind boggling. Even more mind boggling were the benefits the pastor and board members garnered. I won't get into my spiritual beliefs, but suffice it to say, they've changed. This song was when I was questioning my faith.
Check out my arrangement of 'Silent Night'. For the guitar players it's in open D tuning. It features one of the very best mandolin players ever and a client of mine when I was in the music industry, Emory Lester.
