Gastroscopy tomorrow - anxiety has me spiralling
My gastroscopy is booked for tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. Up until this point, my main fears have revolved around what they are going to find. I'm still afraid of that, but now that it's nearly time I'm beginning to freak out about the actual procedure!
My plan is to ask for sedation, as heavy as they will permit. I've stupidly read some of some people's traumatic experiences (being aware, trying to resist and being held down, etc) and now I can feel myself spiralling into a panic.
Can anyone reassure me that I will be okay??
Re: Gastroscopy tomorrow - anxiety has me spiralling
I've got an appt for one on the 8th June. I'm not looking forward to it. I'm going to try it without IV sedation but i've got some Diazepam. I've been told the procedure only takes 5 minutes, which is a plus.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Re: Gastroscopy tomorrow - anxiety has me spiralling
I had 2 of these last year and have never had a traumatic experience.
Re: Gastroscopy tomorrow - anxiety has me spiralling
Ive had 8 over the last 3 years and i can honestly say I've never had a bad experience its all about your breathing, I've never had sedation either as i want to get out as quick as possible.

Thank you for your replies. I will let you know how I get on.
I don't mind hanging around aferwards Bow. I've got two toddlers at home, so a lie down and a cup of tea afterwards will be like a mini holiday!

I've never thought of it like that Hazelbritt, I will think that when i go for mine later in the year I have a 5 year old and a 11 month old :)

Well, it's all over and done with. It wasn't the most pleasant of experiences, but it wasn't horrendous. The sedation didn't knock me out as much as I was hoping for - I felt quite aware of what was happening. I did gag a bit, but it was over pretty quickly.
The results are that I have a hiatus hernia, which they want to manage with acid reducing drugs and weight reduction. So, no cancer!

Awesome news! I'd take a hernia over the C word any day. :D

Great news! Well done!
How long was the procedure? Not the build up just the time the camera is in then out?
Thanks

Great news!
I will look back at your posts to see your symptoms as I have one on the 9th June. Also thinking about going for sedation.
How are you feeling now?

Nope and i'm really not looking forward to it. I'm going to try without sedation so i can get in and out. I've been told it only takes 5 mins, i hope it does.

I recommend the sedation, especially if you suffer from anxiety. It's only light so no harmful effects. Gagging would be just awful. I've had 3 gastroscopies over the years and had the sedation with all of them :)

I was thinking that too, but I’ll probably go for sedation.
I’ve noticed that my anxiety is flaring up again the closer it gets.

Please do not worry about the sedation. The numbing of the throat with the spray is good but with the mild sedative you are responsive but do not have any gagging issues at all. For me, yesterday, it was a good experience.
I needed the sedation as I had to be perfectly still whilst they fitted the electronic device to my oesophagus.
But I would have opted for it anyway, I have had one in the long ago past without sedation, never again for me.
Best wishes to you.
