4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Hello everyone! Glad I managed to find this place because I've been going a little nuts.
It all started with some trouble clearing my throat of phlegm, which was really annoying me. After reading that this could be a sign of something more serious, I started getting health anxiety. But I wasn't too worried about it in general.
Then came the "flu", or flu like symptoms. First my mouth started going dry and I had some minor trouble swallowing along with a general feeling of "umm something doesn't feel right" for a couple of days.
Then I had a high fever of around 39c or so, shivers/trembling, some phlegm and snot but no real cough or anything along them lines.
Then I started feeling random pain in places, my liver region, then my upper back, then both sides of my abdomen, these have all since gone.
I lost some weight, probably due to the fact I felt like crap, but nothing major. I dropped from about 148lb to 143lbs and have generally held around that number. (I've developed a need to check myself at least twice per day).
I also had numbness in various places, even my face and jaw which was super scary!
Oh, and a couple bouts of diarrhea, and also some nausea (rare, and short periods of time).
Lately I've also had muscle cramps too, but that seems to have stopped now.
Today, I awoke to a wet mouth for the first time in nearly 4 weeks. (Dry mouth is one of my other symptoms).
But, I felt the chills again earlier, my tonsils are still swollen (4 weeks like I said) and my mouth is slightly dry again.
I've been to the ER twice, and have had:
* Chest X-Rays - Front and side, both all clear.
* A "battery" of blood work (7 vials worth) and nothing came back of concern/all clear.
* ECG/EKG (whichever one is the quick/simple one) and that was all good.
* Tested for strep = negative
* Tested for mono = negative
* Tested for flu = negative
My diagnosis is "virus and anxiety" which seems plausible, but the swollen tonsils, uvula, dry mouth, and having the chills today are still really bugging me.
I guess it could be a really nasty virus, i've seen quite a few reassuring threads right here on this forum, but I can't shake that nagging thought it might be something more.
Have any of you ever experienced such a virus? Or a bad case of viral tonsillitis/pharyngitis like this? Just looking for like incidents to ease my mind, am planning on booking another Dr's appointment to see if I can get to an ENT or further testing and figure this all out.
Thanks for any help! Trying to keep positive but it's really playing on my mind.

You've had a nasty virus. It happens. Everything you describe is normal for that and all tests are good. Give it a couple of weeks, it'll get better.

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Hi
I've had a similar situation but mine has lasted 8-9 weeks now.. I get a slight temperature as well and post nasal drip but I found some slightly enlarged lymphnodes and tonsil on one side only so of course I instantly start having fears about lymphoma..
I keep saying to myself that it's a virus because my blood work was clear and my throat has been checked and they say everything is fine.. but for the exact same reasons I feel it might be something wrong that bloodwork would miss?
It's so exhausting! I do feel like I'm VERY slowly getting better but I can't help it

Thank you very much Fishmanpa! Hopefully that's all it is. :yesyes:
Still getting some mixed symptoms, currently feeling a bit weak and the throat is still tender/sore too. Fatigued also, but haven't been sleeping too well either.
Everyone thinks I'm fine, just need to convince myself of that fact. :D

8-9 weeks? Damn! I'm at about 5 now I think and it sucks. :roflmao:
I have the same fears, but I've had 5 Docs examine now and they all seem to think I'm fine apart from having a bad virus and the attached anxiety.
Hopefully it will pass soon, I do feel better "in myself" but then I sometimes have weird symptoms come up again and they freak me out.
Seeing a dentist soon too to hopefully get my mouth put in order also.
Will keep you all posted, feel free to drop in and let me know how you're getting on too Sabbine! Would like to keep in touch with anyone else experiencing similar things. :-)

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
I forgot to mention the sweating didn't I?
When this first started, I noticed I had night sweats and was extra sweaty during the day too, I frankly stunk!
The day time excess sweating seems to have abated, but I keep waking up sweaty pretty frequently.
I haven't had "drenching" night sweats, aka the symptom of Lymphoma (swollen tonsils is the concern here), but I had a nap yesterday and awoke in a fairly sticky state.
I also feel pretty weak at the moment too, but nowhere as bad as when I ended up in the ER.
Apart from the swollen tonsils, 5 doctors have checked my nodes and seem unconcerned by them, so I guess I should be too!
The sweats are still worrying me though. Anyone experienced these for an extended period of time from a viral infection? :D
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Thanks Throatgoat, will let you know if I have any updates!
Aaah the sweating, painfully familiar! Doesn't help with worrying as well, although I do think it might be partly caused/made worse by anxiety, at least in my case. I also think it comes with a bit of a temperature as well? Hence the chills..?
I really hope it's just a virus but I keep freaking out by the slightest thing at the moment too. I know it can get pretty bad when it starts playing on your mind but all you can do is be patient, chase the doctors when you need answers and in the meantime try not to worry too much..all best :)

Yeah they're pretty scary the sweats! Didn't seem to have them yesterday/last night though, so fingers crossed they are going. (They've done that before, but came back again).
I don't think I've had a temperature lately, if anything my body temperature has been low a couple times recently. But it's difficult to tell with the thermometer I'm using, it might not be very accurate.
Me too! Let's hope we've caught something similar, as strange as that sounds. My blood work is fine, so my main concern (lymphoma) is probably just my mind playing tricks on me.
Some good things are that my appetite has been back recently, I'm not losing any weight and generally seem better. But the chills, sweats and occasional weakness still lingers along with a few other symptoms. I've not got any swollen nodes according to 5 Doctors either. :yesyes:
Hopefully I can get an appointment with my doc soon and perhaps get a few more tests done to try and pinpoint what's going on.
Wishing you well!

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Hi - just wanted to offer some support and maybe receive some too. I started having night sweats about 10 years ago, during a very stressful time. I thought I had the worst. I went to a few doctors, blood drawn, and they all said it was related to my hormones. At this point, gotta believe them. I can’t imagine I’d be okay 10 years later if I had lymphoma 10 years ago. So you can have night sweats and be healthy. Mine come and go. Frequently they are not drenching, sometimes they are.
Fast forward to today - I am also having soreness in my throat when I move or open my mouth wide, and started having flu like symptoms (mucous, runny nose, nasal, mild weakness). Doc says there is nothing to biopsy, and isn’t concerned about swollen node. Just finished antibiotics though with little to no change, so I’m still worried. Going to follow up, but so scared it’s something bad.

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Just going to chime in here as I have been lurking around these parts with some anxiety myself.
I had very similar symptoms that you and others in this thread have mentioned, sore throat, inflamed tonsils, body aches, chills at one point with a high fever, then a low-grade fever for a bit, and now some post nasal drip causing more symptoms.
I had read online that, "anything lasting over 7 days needs medical attention", and when I brought it up to the ENT and my GP before that they both laughed and said it is more than common for viral infections to linger or for less serious secondary infections to pop up.
When I mentioned to the ENT that my symptoms of sort throat, post-nasal drip, and other stuff has been going on since april 1st he just said, "Well, of course." Keep treating the symptoms and trust the doctors. You'll get better.

I used to get night sweats randomly too. Usually after drinking. (Could be my problem now too I guess! Need to quit).
But never usually for a period of time like now, I'm at about 5 weeks of them being on and off. (2 night without most recently I think).
They're probably a normal bodily function that just creates more anxiety when you're thinking something's wrong I guess.
I just stumbled on a great article about GAD here:
physio-pedia.com/Generalized_Anxiety_Disorder
Doesn't mention night sweats, but I've had pretty much all of those other symptoms over the past 5 weeks.
RE antibiotics, I was given a scrip for Amoxicillin and another for penicillin. But was told to only take them if I tested positive for strep. (2 different docs checked, both came back negative).
If what we're suffering from are viral infections, then antibiotics won't do anything for us, I just wish they could tell me which virus I'm suffering with. :roflmao:

It sucks that you're suffering the same symtpoms too, but that's also great to know in a way.
My doctor also seemed unconcerned that my symptoms had been going on for 3 weeks on my last visit, said to come back after another 2 if things hadn't gotten better, so I'm going to see them again next week.
My symptoms seem to change by the day, which makes me think it's all anxiety related. The dry mouth (better, but still there now and then) and tonsils persist, but other things keep changing, like today my main problem is tingles, I seem to be having some heartburn/reflux, and my right abdominal area feels as if there is a little "twinge" there again too.
Really weird! Hopefully we all get past this "whatever it is" soon as possible. :D

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Woke up in a sweat feeling cold as hell again this morning. Really freaking me out this symptom. I wouldn't say I was "drenched" but felt a bit wet.
Still getting some "lazy eye" like double vision too, feeling weak, seemingly needing to pee a lot, and my skin seems to be denting easily too.
I posted a reply to someone on another forum that they shouldn't be worrying about sock indentations, but now I'm getting the exact same thing! If I prod myself anywhere it seems to leave a mark instantly.
Seeing my doctor next week, but not sure I can wait that long! Seem to be getting worse.
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
I noticed exactly the same with the marks, do you think it might just be tiredness from whatever this is causing poor blood circulation? I know I don’t work out at all these days nor do I eat particularly well and I’m kind of skinny to begin with so maybe it’s just being out of whack because of it all + us over analyzing everything? I hope it’s that anyway :)
I had a couple bad days, then a couple better ones, now I found a small palpable lymphnode on the inside of my collarbone and it sent my HA through the roof. I know it doesn’t have to be malignant but I’m going to the doctor as soon as I can get an appointment as I can’t help but think of the worst possible scenarios atm  my tonsil and other nodes feel the sameish so I really hope it’s one of those viruses that last for months, apparently they are not the most common thing but they do occur.
Let us know how you get on!

It could be! I'm not exactly very active right now, so maybe that's the cause. I've been eating okay through all of this, apart from in the earlier stages were my mouth was dry during the day too, I found it difficult to eat, but now I'm generally feeling hungry again, and trying to eat healthier too.
I thought I had a palpable node at one point too! Turns out it wasn't a node at all, and is just my pulse. :yesyes: Hoping it's the same for you too!
My current symptoms are:
- Dry mouth (mostly morning, not all the time anymore)
- Tonsils still looking red/swollen (both sides),
- I can feel nodes in all kinds of places (small, squishy and movable)
- Mood swings (cried earlier)
- Chills (hot flashes sometimes too)
- Nausea (worse than before, could be the be the Ativan/Nasal spray)
- Constipation (I think it might be caused by Ativan too)
- Minor occasional tinnitus
- Feeling weak/shaky
- Anxious (Well, I was diagnosed with anxiety!)
My doctor prescribed me with Sandoz Momesetone (sp?) for post nasal drip, and Ativan (0.5mg) for the anxiety. So some of my current symptoms could be being caused by those 2 meds.
I decided not to take either of them today to see if it makes any difference, but it might take a while for the effects to wear off though I guess.
Hopefully the Doctors appointment goes well and I can finally get some clarity and put the thoughts of the "C" word out of my head! I'm sure your's will go well too. :D

Spoke too soon about eating okay, been struggling with that today at both lunch and dinner time, although just about managed to force myself.
Really worrying right now, and I know it ain't helping.

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Freaking out a bit the past few days.
* still getting night sweats
* feel weak
* lost a little bit of weight
* trembling
* not talking properly
* skin indenting easily
* feeling nodes in groin and neck
* tonsils still inflamed and breath terrible along with dry mouth
Could this all be anxiety?

Hi TG Yes in a word it can, the tonsils how ever sound inflamed and is probably tonsillitis which may need antibiotics/ or a op had mine out years ago now adays it's a lot simpler and quicker so would get them checked but it's not life threatening :) so just to say again the rest can be put down to your HA condition which needs addressing with your dr in the first place ATB

Thank you very much for the reply, puts my mind at ease [emoji3]
Yes there's definitely some tonsillitis going on, I've been tested for strep and mono, but both came back negative.
Might need to see an ENT I think.
Got an appointment tomorrow with doctor, so hopefully I can get some answers.

I might have been able to, but I forgot the password for this account and wasn't in the mood to do a password reset on a small phone. :D
Another "symptom" I seem to have developed today is feeling like I'm going to fall over/off-balance. Also another anxiety symptom apparently so not too worried about that.
Will see what tomorrow brings!

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Okay, I have an update.
My blood has been tested for white/red count, platelets, kidney function, liver function, thyroid, and various other nutrients like b12 and potassium, and all of those are 100% fine. So It seems highly unlikely to be anything serious. (Am I right FMP?)
This is on top of knowing I haven't got Flu, Mono, or Strep. So a virus seems like the most likely candidate. Plus anxiety of course.
I now also have a referral to a neuro and an ENT, so hopefully those appointments go well, and I can finally put this horrible episode behind me. :)
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Hello Throatgoat!
That sounds like great news to me :D it’s good that you got the ball rolling on the ENT/neuro front as well so that you can get some answers, hopefully confirming it’s a nasty virus.
I only managed to get an appointment for the 21/05, but I can keep an eye on things and see how everything goes until then..going on week 12 of this  will keep people posted in case anyone has similar things going on!

Hey Sabbine!
Yeah I think it's great news! I'm feeling a bit better about myself now, but my anxiety still seems to be there for whatever reason. Hopefully now I know more about what they tested for, that information can get into my subconscious mind and it will stop playing tricks on me. :roflmao:
That's great to hear! I'm not sure when my appointments are yet, waiting for the phone calls, but she said the ENT shouldn't take too long.
Week 12? Jeez! I'm at 6 tomorrow, I know someone else who has a different kind of bug with more cold-like symptoms who has been sick for 6 weeks too. Something's going around for sure!
Hopefully we all feel better soon. For sure keep us posted! Would love to know how you're getting on. :D

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Just posting an update. Feeling a bit better today for the first time in weeks.
Still having symptoms, but nowhere as bad as they have been. My mood seems a lot better too.
Woke up ever so slightly sticky, felt a little weak and off balance but have moment where I felt normal today. Hopefully this means whatever was attacking me and/or the anxiety is going away.
Still not heard about my ENT or Neurologist appointment yet, but we'll see what happens. I'm not going to worry about how long I might have to wait, because that will just fuel the anxiety monster.

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
I've just noticed something else that could be sinister, I seem to have white patches inside my mouth. Like the side of my inner cheeks near my molars looks pale/white in color.

More than likely! It sometimes gets a little irritated there so maybe that's all it is. :yesyes: Seems to be both sides too, need to see a dentist about my teeth anyway, so I'm sure he/she can check it out.
Positive thoughts, yes! I'm trying I promise!

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Positive news: I don't think I had any night sweats last night. (I doubt it's cancer if they come and go right?)
I did wake up with a bit of a shiver/panicky feeling though, and am currently getting some chills, but perhaps I should quit drinking.
Still feel a bit off-balance/weak and fatigue too. But hopefully that will pass too.
Going to phone my ENT today to see if they got my referral.

Yeah some good news indeed! The chills are freaking me out a bit right now though, they've gotten worse as the day has progressed so far, I feel absolutely frozen even though I'm in a room of about 21+c, and wearing 3 layers including a winter jacket.
Hopefully this is the anxiety (or last nights wine) doing this. I'm trying to tell myself it is. :yesyes:
ENT didn't have my referral yet, said to check back in a couple days. (Crosses fingers next time I call that they've got it).

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Tuesday update: the night sweats returned last night.
I wonder if it's the weekend's alcohol coming out of my body, or I've just had another thought; I recently changed my bedding, all new duvet and sheet sets. Perhaps they're not breathing properly and/or making me sweatier than my old ones? (Not sure that explains the coming and going though).
After the sweats, that seems to kick something else off where I wake feeling absolutely cold and shivering too. Worrying stuff, and then of course my anxiety gets set off!
Still feeling weak/fatigued too and lost a little bit more weight, perhaps 1kg/2lbs but nothing major. It almost seems like my change in diet due to my "C" fears has ended up with me shedding fat, because I'm looking more veiny too.
Also had another of those tiny tonsil stones today as well.
This is my new thing for trying to keep positive, my "what's not wrong with me" list:
* I seem to have lost the dry mouth for the most part, I don't wake up feeling as though my mouth has been catching sand all night.
* I actually have no swollen nymph lodes. Finally got that idea into my head! Doctors think they're fine, I should too!
* I haven't had any stomach issues for at least a week.
* I can't remember the last time I felt nausea
* People still think I look healthy, despite my mind telling me otherwise
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Here's a fun one I don't think I've seen posted...
Since all this started, and it seems stronger more recently, my senses seem to be extra heightened. So my hearing, which is pretty strong anyway has been up a notch, my taste-buds seem to have been covered in those miracle berry things and I can taste everything like someone has turned the volume up to 100%.
But the weirdest sensation is my sense of smell. It too is in hyper mode and last night I thought I could smell my dinner being excreted through my arm pits.
Weird as hell! Ever had that? Sounds freaking weird, but there you go! :roflmao:
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Made the mistake of looking in my throat again today, and it seems that the redness that was only on one side near the tonsils (whatever you call the skin in front of them) is spreading to both sides.
There's also a tiny red spot on one side now too.
Stop looking might be a good idea, will phone ENT tomorrow to see if they got my referral.
-
Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
I feel like I can't walk properly still, so decided to go for a walk to try and see how I was doing. Probably shouldn't have because I feel worse now, ever get a drunken walking sensation? That's the only way I can describe it.
Also got through to my ENT and they say it could be MONTHS, so of course my anxiety isn't being helped by that at all!
What to do? I'm almost tempted to just go to the ER again and get them to do some more examinations. Either that or go see a dentist to get my mouth looked at...
Any suggestions or help?

Dentist appointment booked. So at least I might be able to get one of my main concerns address next week.
Funny how you can get an appointment to see a dentist within a week. But for something potentially more serious (I'm telling myself it isn't!) it takes 12 months.

Not a nice sensation is it mate? And yeah it's doesn't make sense but the NHS is stretched beyond belief ( that's no excuse either) What does your dr say about your swollen tonsils years ago I had very bad tonsils and they were removed problem solved:) So if anything I would go back to your drs and see if they can get you a urgent referral for ENT I would seriously push for that. Let us know what happens ATB

Nope not good at all, it's horrible! Been like it for a while now too.
I'm not in the UK, it's the Canadian system making me wait in my case. Going to try and figure out a way to expedite my appointment if possible. I feel like I want to be seen tomorrow, not next year. :whistles:
Seeing the dentist next week, if they don't spot anything sinister then I might try for another doctors appointment.
Thank you, will do for sure!
I'm wondering is Bupa still a thing in the UK? I might have to go elsewhere to try and get to the bottom of this. (My UK passport is easily renewed).

The other thing wondering about, the doctor said my inflammation markers were normal. Surely if something more sinister was going on that would have been a red flag?
I dunno, finding out I might have to wait months to see the ENT has got my anxiety firing off something chronic.

To top it all off, I've just had a massive acid burp that came right up to my nose.

Hi TG :) Well your dr hasn't flagged up anything serious and would say they would have flagged it red if it was. Like wise if you dentist doesn't flag up anything serious then this good news! Are you currently on any antibiotics? So personally I would leave it there if the dentist confirms it's nothing serious. Yeah Bupa is still very much in the uk
Do you in Canada have private hospitals/drs/dentists? I know you want to get this sorted take one step at a time though :) ATB

Yep, all very true! It's just this throat/tonsil thing I can't seem to get my mind off. The funny thing is; for all I know my tonsils have been like that for weeks/months and they've not been bothering me. But now I've had some virus/flu-like thing they're really annoying me.
If I wasn't already having trouble clearing my throat prior to this, I don't think I would probably not be worrying right now. But I've been seeing "clearing throat can be a sign of this c word" and freaked myself out.
I'm not on antibiotics, no point if the doctors think it's viral either. I've got a scrip for amoxicillin in my wallet though. I've wondered if I should just give it a shot or not before, but if my stomach is having issues here and there? I'm not sure that'd be a wise move.
Also good to know if for whatever reason I need to go back to the UK!
Will see how things go for the next few days and hopefully I won't have to reach for the Ativan, I've got a couple left and don't really want to take any of them because of the side effects.

Just had a nasty smelling bit of phlegm from out the back of my nose now too.

Re: 4 weeks of swollen tonsils + Flu-like symptoms too.
Seriously considering my next move....
I've just eaten something and am getting terrible acid reflux again. I normally have trouble belching if anything, since the "virus" it's more like I belch and regurgitate effortlessly.
Feel weak as hell, still getting cold (chills are apparently with a fever? I haven't got those. I feel/am cold), my throat feels like it's getting progressively worse, and a whole bunch of "anxiety symptoms".

Pretty sure I've lost some more weight.
Middle right abdominal pain is back again as well. (Sharp, but still dull-ish).

Stomach seems to be functioning normally, so that's one good thing!
Can't seem to shake the thought that there is still something more sinister going on. :scared15:
A regular X Ray wouldn't have shown anything wrong with my eso/throat would it? That's what's bugging me! Blood tests wouldn't have shown any abnormalities in my throat/eso either would it?
Might go hospital again and see what happens. Driving myself nuts again because of that ENT appointment being months away.
