Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
I had endoscopy with sedation and I had a colonoscopy at the same time. I can't remember a thing about it. I woke up on a bed with a cup of tea and toast which was nice :) I wasn't sick at all and was allowed home soon after I had drank the tea :) I felt a bit drowsy the rest of the day but was fine the next day.
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
I also have had the same as you are having Dazza.. It is a while a go now, but I can remember being nervous about having it done. I did not feel a thing under sedation and the same as Annie when it was all over -a nice cuppa xx
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
Great, thanks for your replies, makes me feel better, would much prefer it if it was early in the morning but never mind eh, it will be over with before I know it - I hope :)
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
Hi Dazza
the dr should give you pethidine and midazolam on top of the throat spray. the pethidine is for pain relief whilst the midazolam will ensure that you are sedated but awake and won"t remember anything. good luck, hope all goes well.
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
When I went everyone on the list went at the same time but when they saw how anxious I was (shaking and crying) they moved me to the top of the list. Make sure you tell them when you get there that you suffer from anxiety. Having had it done I now realise that I had nothing to be anxious about :)
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
To be honest Annie Im not really that concerned, but I will not be waiting, there are 2 things I cannot stand, thats hospitals, and waiting, and this brings those 2 together, so it will be in their best interest to have me in and done, no way am I waiting in a queue, I will just leave if that happens :yesyes:
Do they have to use the throat spray? I dont think I can have it, I have a proper nasty swallowing disorder (choking phobia) due to choking on and off over the past 2 years, and a numb throat is something I wont be able to cope with, I expect it to be sore as it was last time, but I just want it done, then I know where to go from here and what they can do.
My stomach for the last 12 years over-produces acid, and the valve at the top of my stomach does not close so the acid for this amount of time has been travelling up into my throat and mouth, causes severe pain in my stomach and burns my mouth, so finally they are going to do something about it
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
I can't remember having any throat spray so if they did it must have been after they sedated me.
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
Hi Dazza
It is your choice as to what you would like, if you want throat spray they will apply it(Annie - always prior to sedation in order to observe effects), if you want sedation they will give that as well. You can choose to not have anything. The sedation is usually done the way i previously mentioned and will take effect, if given correctly, in under 5 minutes. The effect also lasts for roughly 30mins (dependent on dosage - usually 50mg pethidine, 2.5 - 5mg of midazolam for under 50/60year old). You may feel nauseous for a short while after but should be up and walking round within 2 hours(again pending dose). You wont be able to drive yourself though so will need an escort. Midazolam causes amnesia so you wont even remember it if its given correctly. If its NHS you may wait longer than if private but again depends on who is performing procedure. All the best.
Re: Endoscopy with Sedation
Dazzler,
I had an endoscopy without sedation and it was the most awful experience of my life. If I had to have another one now I would DEFINITELY have sedation. I have a terrible gag reflex and that is what freaked me out.
