Freak accidents making me anxious over unlikely scenarios

My mum told me there was a story in the news about a woman who cut herself shaving and then got an infection, from some rare bacteria, that was so bad she had to have her legs cut off. This was a while ago but it's since stuck with me and I've been scared of cutting myself in the shower since.

Today I was in a rush to shave my legs so I cut myself a few times, and I KNOW I will be fine but the thought of something like that happening to me is compulsive and hard to ignore, which is giving me anxiety.


This happens often, when someone tells me about some freak accident that they read about in the news, if it's health related, I usually add it to my list of things to get anxious about.

I wonder if anyone else does this too?

I have anxiety about infections all the time. What helps me is to remind myself that the overwhelming majority of people don't have any problems with their wounds ever, and that by immediately washing the wound with water and soap I minimize the chance of bad things happening even further.

After all, we have an immune system for a reason, right? :D But I understand your pain. *hugs*
