Mirtzapine Doseage - some advice needed urgently

    Hello All

I have been on a 15mg dose for about 10 days. Sleep has been up and down, the main reason I was prescribed this drug.

My doctor actually said if I wanted more sleep I should go for a 30mg dose, but from all of the posts I have seen online, everybody seems to say the sleep pattern is better if the dose is lower, and the higher doses are for therapeutic purposes. I am surprised that doctors suggest this when the evidence is opposite.

Considering I have not taken the drug for the purposes of depression, but for the anti-insomnia properties, should i take a higher dose tonight to see if it works for me?

    I guess I won't know unless I try...

Have any of you had better sleep on higher doses?

The reverse is usually true i.e. sleeping better on lower doses. I would stick with 15mg until you have seen your GP. I still have problems getting off to sleep sometimes and take low dose zopiclone 3.75mg. I'm on 45mg. EJ

    Dear Elizabeth Jane

Thanks for the advice and it makes sense. What do you think about doing the opposite? i.e. taking 7.5mg?

I have just come down to 15mg of Mirtazapine from 30mg but it still knocks me out and I feel awful in the morning. I have only been taking the lower dose for 8 days so not sure how long I should give before going back to my GP.

They usually say 2-4 weeks for side effects. Did it used to knock you out at 30mg or just 15mg?

I would stick to the 15mg until you have seen your GP. 7.5mg is not the therapeutic dose. It would not increase its sedative effects. You would probably experience some withdrawal effects as in my experience mirtazapine is difficult to withdraw from. Increased anxiety and sleeplessness are symptoms of withdrawal too. EJ
