For situational anxiety I would have thought that standard 40mg tablets would do the trick.

The leaflet that comes with the 40mg drug states:
"Anxiety - 40mg before anxious situations. For long-term anxiety 40mg two or three times a day, treatment is reviewed after 6-12 months."

I'm taking them before stressful situations. Can't really comment on their effect as yet, but when I was on them 20 years ago they did help calm me.

You can either take beta blockers on a longer-term basis, in which case the slow-release are perfect. On the other hand, you can take them as and when you need them. That's what I do now and they're great when you get the physical anxiety symptoms like the racing heart, shaking and nausea.

Give it chance to work and I'm sure it will help.

I think I might take them when needed because my anxiety is when I have meetings or clients, which is once a month. I'm seeing doctor Thursday, so I might suggest this and use amitriptiline daily.

    Red,

Discuss this with your GP before changing your dose. If your GP does think taking them as and when is best, the immediate release tabs will be better.

I will keep taking them as discussed with my doctor and when I see him Thursday I will mention about taking them only on stressfull situations.

I think it is me being afraid to take them as well even though my Doctor said they are safe.

Well, I'm currently on the 2nd day of taking them.

This might sound daft but I'm not sure if they are or not working, it is hard to tell?

I feel tired (which I expected) and I still think about work meetings and then I feel a hot flush come all over me and waves of worry
but I'm not sure if the nausea feeling has improved.

What is the 80mg slow release, two lots of 40mg?

    Day 3

The wife thinks they have made me worse (depressive and very low).

Like people suggested, the thoughts are still present on these beta-blockers, which then brings on the anxiety (nausea in my case).

    Hi Red

Just a quick note. I have been taking 2 x 40mg Propranolol for only 3 days. The side effects I personally have noticed are: coldness, headaches and slightly low mood, felt a little sick. I have found it a little difficult to drop off to sleep but I sleep fine through the night and only wake on my alarm.

So that's, as I said, just after a few days. I will let you know how I am getting on after a few weeks perhaps.

    All the best.
