    WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?

Your self esteem is the level of belief that you have in yourself and of how much you like and accept yourself.
self esteem is often linked with the way you see yourself
(your self image) and is related to concepts such as how much respect you have for yourself (your self respect).
Self esteem goes far beyond just your skills and abilities. We dont choose our physical make-up, and have not necessarily chosen the roles we have in our lives.
Therfore ourapperance and our roles in life are often not a true representation of us as a unique person.
Self esteem plays a vital part in how you live your life.
It effects the level of satisfaction and joy you experiance in working ,learning and playing. However your level of self esteem is variable. It changes as you feel happier in yourself, and is effected by how other respond to you.
It can be raised by giving yourself appreciation and by recieving recognition and praise from others.
Having a high level of self esteem does not mean that you are a perfect person with no room for change or review. Neither does it mean that to have a good self esteem you have to be perfect.
You can still make mistakes, but at least you will not feel destroyed when you do !

Just to let you know that Trac has written a page on this for the new website so that will be making an appearance soon as well.

Perhaps we can combine bits from both this topic and what Trac has written.

Great Idea Nicola . The more we understand self esteem the better. When my cbt booked me in for self esteem classes I was a bit annoyed, because I thought "I suffer panic attacks , "Not" low self esteem"
    how wrong was I ??? [:I]

IF WE HAVE HIGH SELF ESTEEM, WE......

    are proud of our achievements
learn from our mistakes and recover quickly
accept other peoples rioght to disagree
believe we can influemce our future
recognise our right to be treated with respect
accept our own strengths and weeknesses
feel comfortable with who we are
    accept our personal appearance
are aware of our own needs
are willing to take risks and try new things
are comfortable talking about our feelings
use our time constructively and creativitely
    feel comfortable in intamate relationships
are confident and assertive in communicating
look after our health and diet and exercise
have a healthy balance of work rest and play
we make time for fun and switch off from worries
