3 and a half weeks on 40 mg. have had some really good days, and some really bad ones like yesterday. Is it normal to have this up/down thing going on?

Yes. It can sometimes be a case of 2 steps forward, 1 back, and occasionally 1 forward and 2, 3, 4 back. It is usually a good sign as it indicates the med is capable of producing a positive result.

If the propranolol helped then continue to use it. If not ask your GP to prescribe something else, preferably not a benzodiazepine. White-knuckling through anxiety is counter-productive.

It helps the panic somewhat but doesn't stop the thoughts and it makes me depressed if I take it more than once a day. Will have to ring the gp to see what else they can offer.
I just hope this fades soon 😣😣😣😣

Beta-blockers prevent, or significantly lessen the anxiety attack adrenaline surge which is often the most severe anxiety symptom and this can often be enough to regain control, but they have no direct effect on anxiety itself.

I think that would be your best option given this has now persisted for about a week.
