I Survived & Love New York City!!!

    Hi all,

Happy New Year to you all! I left with a girlfriend leaving hubby and kids behind us the day after Christmas to head to NYC. I am just a southern gal who has never even crossed the Mason/Dixie line (for you who don't know what that is it means the Northern part of the USA). Well, our first stop was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which in itself is a huge city. I was overwhelmed by that, plus the drive took 11 hours. Next stop was NYC. What should have taken 2 to 2 1/2 hours took over 5 hours as we got terribly lost right there with Manhattan in our sights. It was quite scary. People drive like mad there. I did keep calm, at least I think I did, but as it was getting dark I was really starting to lose it. We kept seeing the island of Manhattan on the right side and I think we actually drove somehow around it a couple of times because then it would be on the left side, LOL. Anyways, we finally got there via directions from our hotel (dread my cell phone bill) and arrived safely.

Our hotel was right near the Empire State Building, a beautiful sight to behold. The one thing that terrified me I must admit and I panicked was we were in the middle of Time Square and I saw the news (had not turned on the t.v. nor read a newspaper the whole vacation, not that I do anyway) that Saddam Hussein was to be executed and there I was in NYC. I totally freaked out knowing that if any repercussions were to happen it would probably be in NYC right where I was. I actually wanted to leave, but my friend assured me that if it were my time it was my time to go. So I stayed and tried to focus on the present and not the future of what if's.

I had a marveous time when I let my "worried mind" relax although I seriously think the cab drivers have a death wish on their minds to see how many pedestrians they can hit, lol.

I am writing this because I have always been to scared to go to NYC and I did it. Now when I think back I can't believe some of the things I actually did. It was like another person doing those things. Face your fears my dear friends, you will not regret it. Life is short, I should have gone a long time ago.

    Hi Bel,

Well done on your 'adventure'! I think NYC would scare me too, (especially after a long flight and all the airport hassles...)so glad you enjoyed yourself with no regrets.

I'm sure NYC is very different from your home town. Many of us Brits think that many people on mainland Europe drive like maniacs!

    Take Care,

    Ray

All I can say is [Wow!][Yeah!]

Having been to New York many many years ago (I bet it's even larger now) I can only gasp in amazement at this trip.

Surely no city can ever be out of your reach after that
