    Propranolol and alcohol

I have recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and have been put on 80mg slow release propranolol to help with the symptoms until my levels return to normal.

As it is coming up to the Christmas season I wondered if it is ok to have a glass of wine or two whilst taking this medication. I forgot to ask my doctor when I was first diagnosed and don't meet with my endocrinologist until the 29th.

It find mixed advise when I google this, so wondered if anyone had any personal experience of having some alcohol whilst taking the propranalol.

I take my tablet at 9am and wouldn't be drinking until about 8pm at night.

    Thanks in advance!

I take 40mg 3 times a day and drink wine everyday.

It would say on your medicine label if it was a no no as in antibiotics.

I agree with Linda 100%. Just check the patient leaflet which comes with your medicine.

    Re: Propranolol and alcohol

I'm surprised to find out that the docs can give propranolol to treat an overactive thyroid, but I guess because it slows the system down it would be an obvious choice? I just always thought...reading about this alot since being diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2010...that they used thyroxine to treat both under and overactive thyroid by simply adjusting the dose? I take levothyroxine for my condition, but I also take propranolol because my heart misses beats alot and it helps with this. However, I'm also aware of the paradox of taking these two drugs. In fact, when I was given my first prescription for levothyroxine I read that it wasn't to be taken with betablockers such as propranolol, so I had a chat with the pharmacist who told me to leave a few hours between taking the two meds.

I sometimes think that the reason I still have symptoms of a sluggish thyroid is perhaps because of the 40mgs propranolol I also take....even though my doctor tells me the thyroxine is working because my blood tests always come back fine

I was prescribed Carbimazole and propranol 20mg when my thyroid went over-active until I had the Radio-iodine, which killed off my thyroid, as up here they don't like to offer the removal of the thyroid anymore. Then I was put on the Levothyroxine.

Specialist wants me off my Sertraline as he's saying it's clashing with the Levothyroxine and that's why it's yo-yoing.

    I was like 'nooooooooooooooooooooo'
