Re: Propranolol and alcohol
I'm surprised to find out that the docs can give propranolol to treat an overactive thyroid, but I guess because it slows the system down it would be an obvious choice? I just always thought...reading about this alot since being diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2010...that they used thyroxine to treat both under and overactive thyroid by simply adjusting the dose? I take levothyroxine for my condition, but I also take propranolol because my heart misses beats alot and it helps with this. However, I'm also aware of the paradox of taking these two drugs. In fact, when I was given my first prescription for levothyroxine I read that it wasn't to be taken with betablockers such as propranolol, so I had a chat with the pharmacist who told me to leave a few hours between taking the two meds.
I sometimes think that the reason I still have symptoms of a sluggish thyroid is perhaps because of the 40mgs propranolol I also take....even though my doctor tells me the thyroxine is working because my blood tests always come back fine
