how do I come off propanolol safely?

Hi I've been taking propanolol for over 2 years now and I'd like to stop. I would like to know how to do this safely without putting my heart at risk.

I started propanolol for anxiety and tachycardia (my doctor said my fast heartrate wasn't that fast that I needed medication) but now I want to come off it because it doesn't help all that much, I don't want to become dependent at 21 on meds, my doctor said I should try to come off it, and the worst side effect is weight gain.

My blood pressure was originally 100/60 which is quite low because I was slim, but since gaining weight it is now 135/90 which I believe the propanolol has indirectly caused and now it is subsequently more risky coming off propanolol because my blood pressure is higher now.

Also diabetes runs in my family and the propanolol messes around with my blood sugar level.

I took about 120mg a day, I am now on 80mg a day (2x40mg).

How do you slowly wean yourself off from 80mg a day?

Hi i used to take 40mg 2 x a day but I had the weight gain too and awful nightmares so first I halved it to just 40mg and I was fine so after about a week I halved it again to 20mg then again to 10mg then I eventually stopped, i didn't suffer any withdrawal or anything XX

My husband has been taking propranolol for years. His GP keeps giving them to him.
Maybe it is the tablets that has made him put weight on.
He eats sensibly and does quite a bit of walking , but has not lost any weight what so ever. He does not have nightmares but he does talk in his sleep!!!

I used to take the slow release ones but went to the instant release ones and weight has dropped off me! Not complaining lol.

How did you get on weaning yourself off?

My doctor told me just to stop taking it and there would be no risks..or withdrawl. so i did and i was fine.. I was taking 40mg.. i was off for 6 months but started to feel anxious again so i now on 10mg twice a day.. ok so far.
