    Free Mindfulness Resources & More

    Hi all,

This comes up from time to time so I thought I would try and post some in a thread so people can find them more easily. I will also post in the links from Tish's thread on the Top Tips board "Mindfulness Apps" as there were some good ones in there.

I haven't tried many of these but hopefully the websites will prove them to be OK and some of them seem to be known names.

So, here goes. If I come across more, I'll add them in but please add your own.

[Note to Admin: These are free for personal use on the originators, authors or website who has sourced them]

Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World
Professor Mark Williams website that accompanies his books. The first link are the meditations found in his book of this name which where you practice daily but work them by changing to the next weeks meditation over 8 weeks. (there are more in the book and CBT style exercises)

Further free resource(s) from the website:

    The Free Mindfulness Project:
A good mix of known names and organisations with introductions, breathing, body scans, guided imagery, etc.

    Downloads
    http://www.freemindfulness.org/download

    Apps
    http://www.freemindfulness.org/apps

    Mindful Self Compassion
Downloads by a clinical psychologist who also trains others to teach. Given he is Massachusetts, he probably took his influence from MBSR as their centre is there. These also include elements of Loving-Kindness meditation and seem to have a big focus on compassion.

    Mindful Meditations by UCLA
Currently free to download from iTunes. Includes breathing, body scanning including for sleep, Loving-Kindness, etc. Were created for an ADHD programme by their Director for Mindfulness Education.

    The Mindful Solution
An assistant professor with a similiar background to the guy at Mindful Self Compassion (above) who has produced several books including use of Mindfulness in physical conditions. Breathing, body scanning, Loving-Kindness and more.

    http://www.mindfulness-solution.com/...ditations.html

    Mindful (magazine)
A magazine that has a section with links to recommended sources. (I haven't checked these so be careful if they charge)

    http://www.mindful.org/resources#instruction

    Tara Brach
Large resource of guided meditations & recordings from retreats. One of her downloads is on The Free Mindfulness Project website (above), has a large US retreat, background in clinical psychology, etc. Some also in Spanish.

UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness
Body scans, Loving-Kindness, Wisdom, etc. Also offers Mindful Yoga and MBSR Yoga (see 2nd tab)

Posted by NMP members in other threads.

The Headspace app has been used & recommended by quite a few NMP members. It is initially free on a 10 day trial but after that there is a subscription option:

    Updated to create sections.

Mindfulness Based Art Therapy (MBAT) is also available through some practitioners. Here is a link to the thread I am updating with information about this and some examples:

    Thanks Davit & Lucinda!

    ---------- Post added at 07:29 ---------- Previous post was at 07:16 ----------

I found this 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Relief (MBSR) course when looking for resources. There are several that I am aware of that have been based on the MBSR model but created as bespoke versions by therapist companies e.g. Breatheworks but these are normally participatory (face-to-face, individual, group, etc) or online versions but all are normally chargeable. I have seen one posted on NMP somewhere that was a donation based one though.

This one is completely free according to the website. The fact the material is in plain site and not hidden away in a members area would also appear confirm that.

The author is also a certified MBSR intrustor with the University of Massachusetts Medical School where Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Center for Mindfulness, and a retired psychotherapist with specialties in anxiety, stress and trauma.

The author states that a llot of the material is is based on or from other teachers who have allowed their material to be used ncluding Jon Kabat-Zinn (Wherever You Go, There You Are), Pema Chodron (When Things Fall Apart), Tara Brach (Radical Acceptance), Sylvia Boorstein (Don't Just Do Something, Sit There), Sharon Salzberg (A Heart As Wide as the World), Robert Sapolsky (Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers), Marshall Rosenberg (Non-Violent Communication), and Susan Bauer-Wu (Leaves Falling Gently).

Jon-Kabat Zinn is the creator of MBSR, the method which our own MBCT co created by professor Mark Williams (links above in my first post) was based on.

I haven't tried this yet, but maybe it will be of use to other members? It certainly saves buying a book and will be a bit more interactive.

Thanks for this, I' m sure it'll be a great help to people. Mindfulness has certainly helped me, especially when I have something coming up that really scares me.

    Thanks Tish.

There appear to be a large number of meditation based apps on available but I’ve found a few that have been rated in online magazines or mainstream newspapers and included a little of the detail about them.

The following apps are all currently free. However, please make sure you check this prior to downloading as this may be subject to change.

    Stop, breathe, think
An app for Mindfulness, Loving-Kindess, body scan, etc.

    http://stopbreathethink.org/

    Calm
Includes “7 Steps to Calm”, selectable scenary & sounds e.g. sunny seaside with crashing waves, etc.

    http://www.calm.com/

    Mindfulness Training App
Gives a taster experience from key Mindfulness instructors including Jon Kabat-Zinn, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, and others. Also includes talks concerning the science of Mindfulness, varying definitions surrounding the practice, neuroplasticity, and happiness.

    https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/the-...687853790?mt=8
This app is rated by online magazines and mainstream newspapers but it is a paid app, currently at £1.99 on Google Play but because I don’t have iTunes installed I dould not see the price on there.

    Buddify
80+ meditations. Meditations also include “work break”, “travelling”, Walking in city”, etc so they seem pretty diverse and given one is called work break I would expect it has some quick Mindfulness style meditations there that can often be found in books.

Thanks Terry. I'm finding the Mindfulness art therapy absorbing and relaxing. Can't wait to have enough squares to see how they fit together!

Just started doing these yesterday Terry, really like it.

I've always found meditation hard, the quietness seemed to exacerbate my anxiety and the sound of my breathing and heart would throw me off.

Much better these days, still find it hard sometimes.

    That's good to hear, Sam.

I was the same with stillness, it seemed unnatural and made symptoms seem louder. It's temporary though and you learn to tune that out because you start to gain more control over what you should & shouldn't be paying attention to.

Mindfulness dealt with my intrusive thoughts and taught me to more instinctively apply it when I'm on my walks by examining objects and how they make me feel e.g. texture, temperature and how it changes. The same with what I look at because I will think about how it makes me feel.

This would seem the opposite of what you want when all you do all day long is focus on symptoms but if really does work once you get into it.
