Small lump on scalp

I've recently noticed a small lump on the back of my head, in my hair just above my neck. I'm sure I've felt it there before, maybe a few months ago, but I only recently started wondering what it was. It seems as if I can press it down slightly, but I keep touching it and pressing it because I'm worried it's bone. However it seems mobile, in that I can sort of move the skin about on my head and it moves with it.

Of course I fell back on my habit of googling symptoms, and it seems the most likely cause is a cyst or a lipoma, but of course my mind always jumps to cancer no matter how unlikely. I've been without too much health anxiety for a while and now it's making me depressed again to the point where it's very difficult to work. I just need to work up the courage to phone the GP for an appointment. Does anyone have anything similar?

i have exactly the same thing.. Doctor says it is a cyst and can be removed but also said if it doesnt hurt or bother me then you can just leave it.. Hope this helps but doc will tell you pretty much straight away what he thinks it is.. put your mind at rest. x

Thanks for the reply, that is reassuring. It doesn't hurt (it's just been getting sore because I've been poking it so much), and it wouldn't bother me at all except that I don't know what it is! It's nice to hear the same from someone else though, I just wasn't feeling good today. I think I'll go to the doctor anyway, but in the meantime I'll try not to think about it too much. x
