    The Right Foods?

    The Right Foods?

I’ve read briefly on this site and others the correct diet and foods can really help GAD. However I’ve not read any specifics.

So what are the right foods?

    Hi Robin!

I'm guessing by the right foods, they mean 5 a day-the usual! I'm sceptical that diet could have that great an effect on GAD-however, I believe certain foods can boost serotonin levels and I know that specific foods can help ladies ease their PMT. I did see a book in Waterstones the other day that claims to cure depression via diet, but I guess it must be only pretty mild cases! I know they do advise you with GAD to avoid stimulants like caffeine and dark chocolate, and often alchol can be incompatible with many medications.

    All the best

Interesting to kow what foods that could help. As for coffee - I'm no fan - bitter tasting stuff and I haven't got a sweet tooth so I never eat chocolate or cake or anything sweet for that matter. But after work I enjoy a drink or two.

    Hi both,
As for PMT, I think they recommend slow releasing carbohydrates, like cereal bars, Ryvita as opposed to the automatic tendency to go for things like chocolate that give you a short energy boost, followed by a slump, that can have a negative effect on your mood. I found an interesting article yesterday in one of the supplements on seratonin boosting foods which include products that contain Omega 3s, like oily fish and Omega 3 milk and eggs; meat and meat-substitutes, like tofu, that contain a protein called L-tyrosine, which helps produce dopamine and noradrenaline, "happy chemicals". They also recommended fruit and veg and grains.

Err - getting back to the point - I'm a guy so I don't suffer with PMT [debatable as that may be].

    So any dietitians out there?

I think brazil nuts contain something to make you feel brighter. All the better if covered in dark chocolate!
