    Water retention in the neck?

Have you ever had mild fluid retention, without knowing the cause? A massage therapist told me that I have mild fluid retention around one area of my spine, at the base of my neck. She asked how my thyroid is doing, because she said this can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. But my thyroid has always been fine when it was tested... My doctor recently tested all of my hormones (because of possible PCOS), and they came back normal too. So I'm a bit anxious. Can intense stress or sitting in the same position for longer periods of time cause this? I've never heard of water retention at the back of the neck, so it's a cause for concern. What could this be, and how seriously should I take it?

I'm hoping someone here has experienced this. Can anyone shed light on this symptom?

Re: Water retention in the neck?

This inflammation around my neck and throat has been constant and gradually spreading. My ears become plugged more easily now. My sinuses are congested more often. Swallowing is constantly an issue. I'm not sure, but I highly suspect that these things are all connected, and I wonder if water retention in the neck is what started it all. No one has found the source of my problems, and the way it's spreading makes me feel claustrophobic. :'(

I’m a bit dubious of this - not that I don’t doubt the good intentions of this massage therapist, but I’m not sure how he or she is qualified to diagnose oedema. For all we know, you maybe just have extra fat in that area.

I remember getting a massage on holiday once and they told me my shoulders were knotted and something else which just sounded like mumbo jumbo. Talked about it with colleagues in work, including a doctor, and they just rolled their eyes etc. Not that I believed it in the first place, but I just wanted verification in case I was being ignorant.

maybe see your GP if you want reassurance but I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks for your reply, RadioGaGa. I hadn't thought of it from that angle before. I don't mind asking my doctor about it, but she dismisses a lot, including symptoms I have which are common for a condition I've been diagnosed with by a specialist. But I'll try.

I should mention that the area she pointed out has had a lot of chronic pain (sharp stabbing pains) over the years. My chiropractor found that area problematic, and an MRI found wear-and-tear in that area which surprised my specialist due to my relatively young age. So all of this tells me that something's not quite right... it's just a matter of finding someone who can tell me what it is and how to manage it.
