Re: the EU & the UK

May's deal was always doomed when so many of the Remain hardcore MP's will vote it down no matter what. On the other side of the coin we have the ERG who will vote it down no matter what as they want No Deal. I'm not sure any compromise would work but if it can it comes down to those outside of these two hardcore groups voting together which is something they aren't doing right now.

Boris may break the law but he will very quickly be summoned to court and face a potential contempt charge. In this scenario the EU would likely dismiss his lack of action and accept an extension. A50 mentions that the state has to follow it's constitutional processes and breaking the law is going to be an easy out on that. The problem is extending before the date otherwise the damage it done and mechanisms have to change again.

There is a part of me that finds it hard to contemplate a complete change in every system out there on x date like we are switching on a light bulb. But if we can so easily switch it on we should be able to switch it back off again with just as much ease.

There are some things floating around that even though we may No Deal there are agreements in place for months after to manage certain situations. I think I read there will be a 9 month transitional period in this event across the Irish border on food checks. What else is there (that we aren't be assured of) because I assuming the planes won't be dropping out of the sky as some of the media seem to imply.

Juncker is done, the new EU president is in now so hopefully we can soon forget about that idiot. Barnier says there is no room to negotiate further an certainly not on the backstop. The new EU president taking over from Juncker says the opposite as does Hogan who is Irish and in charge of trade going forward. He indicated they could tweak elements to get Parliament to agree to it. And now we have the possibility of a NI only backstop which was originally suggested but May turned down. Boris could get that over the line I reckon as the DUP are no longer holding those key votes so he can easily sell the DUP down the river.

This side of the Atlantic we got our NAFTA which sucks a rat's Mexico got a bad deal now Trump can threaten them with sanctions if they send any migrants over.

Your EU if I understood rightly was to stop wars between Europe countries and it's worked. Not that longs ago Spain had soldiers walking into Parliament on a regular basis and Greece had military dictatorship. Now they both got good democracies better than you Brits lol.

I don't think people here give a shit what happens in Europe but if you guys expect the US to replace all the nice trade deals you got with your neighbors then yous might be in for a nasty shock you'll just be Trump's pet dog

When you guys quit EU, our leader Trump is gonna annex you as the 52nd State if you count Puerto Rico as the 51st. It will be a bit like what Hitler did to France. Your Vichy government will be led by BoJo, Ugly Patel and their buddy who wears a hoody.

Most people in NI are reasonable and having the NI only backstop would help them. However, what of the unionists that could resort to terrorism? Will they view this as them being annexed by us?

Is this something we have all ignored? Essentially a backstop could be seen as moving closer to a united Ireland. I wonder if promises to implement something to remove that backstop will placate the DUP and their hardcore?

Re: the EU & the UK

    Umunna talks some nonsense:

    https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknew...cid=spartanntp

He should know full well that every country joining the EU has to join the Euro. What they actually commit to is joining at some point in the future, it doesn't have to be straight away but if he is suggested we lie to get back knowing we won't go ahead with it does he think the EU will be happy with that?

Germany as the powerhouse that earns the money and the UK to put their lives on the line. That sounds very enticing. The EU should be about spreading trade around and not creating imbalances like that. I'm also pretty sure the French will have a big problem with us zooming back in and taking over an area they are also big in.

And another attack on Corbyn. It is utterly astounding that the Lib Dems can say they don't believe Labour want more equality and seem to think they do. Whilst I have many issues with Labour at the moment I would absolutely put them ahead of the other parties in terms of wanting more for the people.

Update if the GE polls. Now we have more polls since Boris decided to prorogue and the fallout of the Scottish court case:

So, despite all this and media frenzy the Tories are still ahead and by quite some distance in some polls (obviously it may be the source there though so beware the poll commissioner). When will Labour wake up about Corbyn???

Re: the EU & the UK

Its the Boris bounce, hes a lovable rogue and Corbyn is a dirty Trot !!!! Also I read Wired's long eMail and I agree that a lot of what Wired says makes sense, there is definitely a 'get on with it' vibe entering the national conversation however the polling I have seen indicates that far more people want a Deal than are happy with a No Deal exit, plenty of dont knows in there though.

Labour will not wise up at membership level about Corbyn, I think the parliamentary party knows they need a different leader but Corbyn is actually much loved in the party membership and to a degree he is a man of socialist principles, thereby hangs a problem, hes not really someone who compromises or works with consensus with the parliamentary party. Labout conference will be interesting, will it be stage managed at the moment to underpin Corbyn or will dissent be allowed.

I want Brexit done now, but I want a Deal because thats sensible but I can see that there are Irish, UK and EU reasons why a Deal is going to be very very hard to get. Though remember everyone saying it was going to be the easiest Deal ever 3 years ago !!!!

It's being reported that Boris is to tell Juncker be won't request an extension. I wonder if this is confidence the SC case will go his way or just more about perceptions?

Re: the EU & the UK

Barclay has said the transition period could be 3 years to 2022 with the option to extend a year or two beyond. Now if they go for the NI backstop that the EU originally offered, and May rejected, could Boris convince the DUP he would stop it ever coming to fruition by way of technology? And Boris is very close to the ERG so perhaps he can convince them to support a vote on the same basis? That may get it over the line with some support from other parties?

Re: the EU & the UK

A separate point then is a trade deal. I'm dubious about this because I have a feeling the EU will simply say access to the SM and dropping tariffs will be your lot. The latter would be welcome but the former is simply the WA. A "deal" is perhaps more retaining what we had as members in a trade sense. But I also wonder what the EU will demand when it comes to immigration.
