    Question about meds..

I was wondering what is the best long term med for panic attacks that also has few side effects. Thats is one of the main reasons i won't take them.

Also, i was wondering what a good pill is that is helpful when you are having a panic attack.

I'm due to go to the doctors on Tuesday and i want to have a list of possible meds that would suit me.

    Thanks.

Panic attacks started in 1992. 1998 i became agoraphobic which lead into being room bound. Couldn't even get upstairs. 2002 i started getting better, able to drive and work. 2005 i became house bound again. 2009 i have been making SLOW progress, still not able to go anywhere alone, but my journeys are getting longer. No where near 'normal' but at least i can go out.

    Hi Bluebell,

Only your GP will be able to advise you on what meds might suit you.

What suits one may not suit the other, some may experience side effect to differing degrees and some may not.

I'm a recent convert to Rescue Remedy, which is herbal, and found it to be very effective. Maybe you could give that a try?

    All the best for Tuesday

    Re: Question about meds..

I am afraid that there is no wonder pill that suits everyone.

Some people have great success on one med and others have no effect atall.

Some on here had great success with Prozac and for me it did very little. I took Citalopram once and was so ill on it but others on here have done well on it.

There is no one pill that will cure all I am afraid.

You would be better asking for a referral for CBT rather than meds.

    Re: Question about meds..

    Hi..
I've recently started taking Minulus (sp?) made by rescue remedy.
Since i've been having my "relapse" i am scared to even do my weekly Friday shopping and today i had to go up to the doctors with my mum, and sitting in the waiting room my heart was racing and i really wanted to bolt, but i drank a gallon of these new drops and within 5 minutes i was good and actually enjoyed the rest of my afternoon.

I have to go from Essex to Hertfordshire tomorrow with my ma, about a 30 mile journey. I'm trying NOT to think about it otherwise i will be panicking before i even leave the house.

    Hi Bluebell,

You got through the visit to the doctor's surgery so you will get through the journey tomorrow.

Think about what you can do , like today, and not what you can't or what you fear.

I acheived something today that I never thought I would a few days ago - and if I can do it you sure can!

Keep taking your herbal drops as you need them, and keep in your mind the success of today.

Let us know how you get on ok?

    Re: Question about meds..

    Hi Bluebell,

As Nic says, there's no wonder pill that cures all problems and of course, different meds do different things to different people. I'm not sure how effective meds are in controlling actual panic attacks-I would have thought they would be better at tackling the underlying feelings of anxiety and depression. Learning proper breathing techniques is most useful in helping you deal with an attack. However, I do believe Propanalol is useful for the physical symptoms of panic-search this forum for more details.
    Good luck with your appointment.
