    No.

I would say that if you needed to be referred to one then it would be done automatically by your GP. If he doesnt think its appropriate then just accept that decision.

Not sure why you asked but put your mind at rest that if you needed one you would be referred.

    Take care

I pay privately for mine. It causes me great hardship but at the end of the day if I'd had to wait for an NHS psych I'd have had to wait for over 6 months (given where I live). The system stinks but we took the decision that I couldn't wait.

I agree with Jo-it may cost an arm and a leg with BUPA/Nuffield but at the end of the day, it's your mental health and happiness at stake so I feel it is well worth it. And surely if they didn't think you needed their services, they would tell you? Or are they just out for our money???

Re: Paying Privately For Psychiatrists ?

I started going to a private psychiatrist a couple of months ago.

I was so sick of the poor service that is provided free by the government (I live in southern Ireland). I only ever got to see the junior house doctor and they changed every six months so I had no continuity of care.

The private psychiatrist I see is great. I can have a real conversation with her and she actually listens to me. It costs €70 per appointment and I can't afford it but my sister and parents give me the money for it.

Also I can get an appointment with her at short notice which I was unable to do with the free health scheme.

Lots of people will spend loads of money on nights out or new furniture or other material things but they are shocked at the idea of paying for health care.
