One issue I’ve had for a few months now is I won’t go on my parents car reason is they parked close to the green bin so I worried about the toilet germs the passenger door was swung open I mean the other sides of the door are fine but I still refuse to go on the car and I fear I will need to wash my hands each time. How can I tackle this worry the ocd says touch the handle and bin germs will be there?

Talk to your new psychiatrist, tell them in detail everything in terms of your OCD.

Hi Phil. You talked about this a while ago and you were going to try some exposure with it. How did that go? I also agree, it's important that you talk to your new psychiatrist about all your worries. When are you due to see them?

I touched the car door tried not washing my hands for 5 mins then gave in and washed them. I have since avoided his car.

My solution may be to go in the car open the door wash my hands and go back to the car so I have washed them that way I can still use the car I mean these safety behaviours are not ideal but I have to find ways of dealing with this. Throwing money at CBT isn’t what I’m thinking right now my main reason is I am not replacing stuff right now I’m in a good phase right now so I feel I can save cash.

The difficulty is that by doing the safety behaviour, you reinforce the belief that there's something to fear, and there isn't. What's the worst that would happen if you went in the car and didn't wash your hands?

The worst well I don’t worry I will get ill the worst is I want to replace door handles and mobile phones and stuff I touch. I am unsure what to do because right now I’ve never got in that car for months. I do feel I need to face these fears but I have limits as long as I can wash my hands I feel more happy.
