and what were the affects like ? Did you get the head zaps and were you confined to bed for the whole time ?

The anti depressant survival site says to do 10% per month to prevent any risk of brain damage. They believe that most GP's dont have a clue on how to taper safely

Just a bit of dizziness and some head tingling which might have been the zaps. These things are not dangerous and I just floated through them. No brain damage that I am aware of.

    Hopefully not :-)

Maybe this obsession of mine now will prepare me so well for the withdrawels that will hardly notice them at all and none will be a surprise

Were you able to work through them or did you have to take time off ? I found the side effects bad enough for first two weeks, were the withdrawels worse ?

Going on was way worse for me that going off. I kept a positive mindset that the medicine helped me and prepared me to deal with life off of it.

How long did you taper for ?

Surviving antidepressants says this : Does this not frighten you ?

Finally however there will be a group of people who are simply unable to stop whatever approach they take. Some others will be able to stop but will find problems persisting for months or years afterwards. It is important to recognise this latter possibility in order to avoid punishing yourself. Specialist help may make a difference for some people in these two groups, if only to provide possible antidotes to attenuate the problems of ongoing SSRIs such as loss of libido.

looks like these things cause brain damage
On the internet you just read about the horror stories and there will always be some. What about all the people who were helped through depression with antidepressants? There's far more of them.

The meds definitely aren’t fully working if you are able to obsess on negative thoughts. I have been on sertraline three times now and tapered twice. My doctor is recommending that I stay on my 50mg dose to prevent me from obsessing on the negatives of life. If you taper slowly then you won’t even notice. Since I can only get capsules in Canada, I taper down to 25mg then down to nothing over 5 weeks. If you are still on 50mg in a few weeks and aren’t feeling wonderful then talk to your doc about dose increase or medication change since some people don’t respond to this medication.

    Thanks. This is really helpful.

How long were you on the medication when you tapered off before ? I was planning to taper down the 50mg over 8 weeks (2 weeks on 37.5, 2 weeks on 25, 2 weeks on 12.5 and 2 weeks on 6). Would that help me avoid any withdrawels ?

This is probably ridiculous but i think that if i tapered off and went through it and reliased its no big deal then the fear would be gone and i could go back on if i needed to (obviously would have to wait a few weeks again to work)
