I think xl is the slow release version.

It's as Matt says. The extended release means you take it once a day and the longer half life covers you. It's also said to be easier in terms of side effects.
On the twice a day you need to be pretty strict with keeping to taking them. Missing a dose can start you into withdrawal with the short half life.
