Throat Ulcer - terrified it's cancer

Hi all,

I just came back from the Docs after having a sore throat I thought needed looking into. It was getting better but I went anyway hoping to be given the all clear.

But nope, said a throat ulcer and now I am v.worried. One of the symptoms of mouth cancer is a ulcer that doesn't heal and I have had a sore throat for weeks! I am 32 and not a smoker so I have that going for me but now I am terrified it's not going to go away and I am on the path to a cancer diagnosis.

The Doctor is the one who said it's a throat ulcer. I didn't know I had one, just a tickle in my throat.

Said it can be caused by illnesses, coughing e.t.c. Gave me a specific type of mouth wash to use.

Yes, that was the fact I was looking for 'it can be caused by viruses/illnesses/minor trauma (just like the form in your mouth).' Those are the most likely reasons. You said yourself that it was kind of improving, and I suspect it will continue to do so.

Well the pain was going away. I didn't know it was an ulcer so maybe the pain was a normal sore throat and the ulcer was the result meaning it wasn't there the whole time. I dunno.

Even if that’s the case it doesn’t mean that there’s anything to be worried over, you have no proof that it’s not healing. Ulcers are common things and aren’t something that immediately means anything serious. Give it a while on the mouth wash and I’m sure it will be fine.

Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. It doesn't come and go nor does it stop once it starts.

I'm an oral cancer survivor. If it's been improving then it's not something to concern yourself with. Follow the doctor's orders and it will heal. Remember, the mouth and throat are dark and moist and take longer to heal.

Positive thoughts
